Elizabeth Martell (Essex Junction, Vt.), a junior on the UNH women's track & field team, was a two-time New England champion at the New England Outdoor Championships at Solomon Outdoor Track (Dedham, Mass.) on May 12-13. She won an individual title in the 1,500-meter run and was also part of the winning 4x800m relay.
Elizabeth crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 28.55 seconds to best 13 other runners in the second heat of the 1,500m and a total of 28 other entrants in the event. She had not raced in the 1,500m since the season-opening Colonial Relays (March 30-April 1).
UNH’s 4x800m relay quartet entered New Englands with the second-fastest seed time but, with Elizabeth as the anchor leg, recorded a winning time of 9:07.45, which was 7.27 seconds faster than the runner-up. Elizabeth and her teammates also won the 4x800m relay crown one week earlier at the America East conference championship meet.
The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field First Round is May 24-27 at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
