Senior captain’s 50-free time of 22.98 seconds bested Jenny Thompson’s 23.21 in 1990
DURHAM, N.H. — Senior captain Audrey Mahoney (Downers Grove, Ill.) of the UNH swimming and diving team broke a 35-year-old Swasey Pool record previously held by former U.S. Olympian Jenny Thompson to highlight Day 1 of the Wildcats' Family Weekend dual meet against Central Connecticut State.
Mahoney won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.98 seconds to knock Thompson's 1990 time of 23.21 seconds off the perch for No. 1 in Swasey Pool history. The accomplishment comes six days after Mahoney set the Forbush Natatorium pool record at Vermont in the 50-free (23.52).
"After Audrey set that UVM pool record last weekend, I gave her a personal challenge for this weekend's meet," UNH head coach Josh Willman said. "She really came through, and it was fun to watch!"
Through 10 events, UNH has built a commanding 123-44 lead over CCSU, with nine more events on tap Saturday beginning at 11am.
