Poulakis' Late Goal Lifts UNH Past Lafayette, 2-1

EASTON, Pa. – Senior captain Nicole Poulakis (Ajax, Ontario) scored with 18 seconds left in regulation to lift the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Sunday afternoon's 2-1 victory against Lafayette College at Rappolt Field.
Tasmin Cookman (London, England), another senior captain, scored a goal to tie the game, 1-1, in the 54th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Johnson (Walpole, Mass.) made nine saves and senior midfielder Madilynn Clark (Evanston, Ill.) was credited with a defensive save.
Lafayette goalie Raffi Fragomeni finished with nine saves and Katie Gibb scored the Leopards' goal.
UNH improved to 9-6 overall and Lafayette is now 10-6.

FIRST QUARTER
- Lafayette controlled possession a majority of the first quarter to generate a 5-1 advantage in shots.
SECOND QUARTER
- UNH generated a 3-1 edge in penalty corners in the second quarter as the shots were even at 4.
- Johnson denied Maddie Evans in the 28th minute, and moments later Clark kept the score deadlocked at 0-0 with a defensive save.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Wildcats had a 6-2 shot advantage in the third quarter but it was Gibbs who scored with 1:46 on the clock to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.,
FOURTH QUARTER
- Neither team had a corner and UNH had a 3-2 shot advantage in the fourth quarter.
- Cookman tied the score, 1-1, at 53:11. Fragomeni came approximately 10 feet off the line for a clear attempt, but Cookman stopped the ball inside the top-right side of the shooting circle and blasted a low shot past the goalie into the cage.
- Johnson turned aside a shot by Mia Freeman in the 55th minute to keep the game tied.
- With 30 seconds remaining on a restart on the left sideline from 35 yards, Cookman lifted the ball into the circle. After one bounce, Poulakis settled the ball in the middle and UNH was awarded a penalty stroke when she was tackled by the goalie.
- Following a delay for video review – and all other Wildcat field players huddled at the 25 - Poulakis calmly lifted a hard shot into the left side of the cage to give UNH a 2-1 lead with 18 seconds to play.
- The 'Cats kept the Leopards outside of the 25 the rest of the way to secure the win.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Poulakis extended her goal streak to six games and point streak to 12 with Sunday's goal. She has 19 goals and seven assists for 45 points during the streak.
- On UNH's career leaderboard, Poulakis climbed into a tied for #2 in goals (56) with Gaby Haroules (1977-80) and she climbed to #2 in career points (140) by surpassing Whitney Frates (139 from 2008-11); Poulakis is #5 in career assists (28).
- On the program's single-season leaderboard, Poulakis climbed to a tie at #6 in goals (19) with Haroules (1979) and Karen Geromini (1985). She also rose to #5 in points (45) by passing Katie White (44 in 2003).
- Cookman is #4 in assists (29), #5 in points (131) and #6 in goals (51).
- Johnson stopped 17 of 18 shots in the two games this weekend for a .944 save percentage and 0.50 GAA.
- Clark's defensive save was the first of her career.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH finished with the slight edge in both shots (14-13) and corners (4-2).
- Shots on goal were even at 11.
