DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) of the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was named a 2023-24 New England Division I Women's All-Star on Tuesday by the New England Hockey Writers Association.
Blair, one of three goalies and 18 players overall who was selected a New England All-Star, broke UNH's single-season saves record with 917 in her rookie season with the Wildcats. Those 917 saves ranked 10th in the nation, and her other national rankings included fourth in minutes (2131:18), 11th in wins (18) and tied for 15th in shutouts (five).
On the Hockey East leaderboard, Blair was second in both wins and minutes, third in shutouts and fourth in saves. In league-only games, she tied for first in wins (14), ranked third in minutes (1594:28), and tied for third in shutouts (three).
Blair made 30+ saves in a game 11 times and that included a high of 40 in a 3-1 win at Providence College on Nov. 3.
The New England Hockey Writers Association will hold its annual awards reception Tuesday, April 23 at the Prince Restaurant (Saugus, Mass.). The dining portion of the reception begins at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the awards ceremony at 7 p.m.
Cost to attend the reception is $45 per person. Anyone interested in attending the event should contact Joe Bertagna at j2b2hockey@gmail.com. Questions should also be directed to Bertagna at (978) 376-5494.
Blair was named to the Hockey East Third Team All-Star and All-Rookie Team, and she was voted runner-up for the league's Rookie of the Year award. She became the first Wildcat freshman named a Hockey East All-Star since 2013.
Her other accolades included four-time Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week honoree, received a Player of the Week award and was named the Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Week once – all by Hockey East.
In her first postseason game, Blair stopped all 15 shots she faced to record her fifth shutout and backstop third-seeded UNH to a 3-0 victory against No. 6 seed University of Vermont in a Hockey East quarterfinal game at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex on March 2.
With her 13th save of that game – at 10:58 of the third period – Blair became UNH's record holder for single-season saves and her game total of 15 saves increased her season number to 889. The previous benchmark of 886 was established by then-freshman Ava Boutilier in 2018.
Blair recorded three consecutive shutouts against Harvard University, Holy Cross and Vermont as part of a total shutout streak of 193 minutes, 1 second that spanned Nov. 11 to Dec. 8.
Blair recorded the first of her five shutouts Oct. 21 with a 27-save effort Oct. 20 at UConn. She stopped 59 of 61 shots in a two-game series against Providence for a .967 save percentage and 1.00 GAA.
New Hampshire finished the 2023-24 season with 18 wins and placed third in the Hockey East standings with a 14-11-2 league record. It marked UNH's highest league win total since 2009 and the aforementioned 3-0 playoff win against UVM was the program's first home quarterfinal game since 2013.
