Cookman's Two Goals Lifts UNH Past Vermont, 3-2, in Overtime

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior captain Tasmin Cookman (London, England), recorded two goals with her second goal leading the University of New Hampshire field hockey team to Friday's 3-2 overtime victory against the University of Vermont at Memorial Field.
Cookman also scored the game-tying goal in the 48th minute. UNH's other goal scorer was fellow junior captain Nicole Poulakis (Ajax, Ontario). Sophomore Kathelijne Knuttel (Groningen, Netherlands) was credited with one assist.
UNH freshman goalie Abby Johnson (Walpole, Mass.) made five saves and grad student Immie Gillgrass (Worcester, England) was credited with a defensive save.
UVM goalie Merle Vaandrager made eight saves. Lotte Kanters and Sophia Drees scored the Catamounts' two goals.
UNH improves to 6-7 and remains perfect in America East conference play at 3-0, Vermont is 4-7, 1-2.

FIRST QUARTER
- Both teams played strong defensively in the scoreless opening 15 minutes as UNH had a 2-1 shot advantage, with only one shot on goal.
- UNH was given two penalty corners and UVM earned one.
SECOND QUARTER
- In the opening minute of the second quarter, Poulakis drove into UVM's circle and her dangerous shot with Vaandrager making a sliding save.
- On a UVM penalty corner, Olivia Nolan inserted the pass to Kanters for the goal to give Vermont the 1-0 lead with 2:37 left in the second quarter.
- UNH dominated the first half in shots (10) with five on goal, while UVM recorded only two shots with none on goal.
THIRD QUARTER
- UNH was awarded penalty stroke for a Vermont foul inside the circle at 33:04 and Poulakis scored aiming for the bottom-left post to tie the score, 1-1.
- Johnson made an incredible left-leg kick save to deny Sophia Drees on UVM corner in the 37th minute.
- On a UNH corner with 53 seconds left in the third quarter, Kathelijne Knuttel (Groningen, Netherlands) sent a shot toward the cage the hit off the post.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Vermont was awarded a penalty stroke at 47:44 and Drees converted on a shot to the bottom right to give UVM the 2-1 lead.
- Cookman responded 13 seconds later by dribbling halfway down the field, air dribbling past a pair of defenders at the top of the circle and tapping the ball into the cage to pull the Wildcats even with the Catamounts, 2-2, at 47:57.
- In the 56th minute, Cookman's breakaway generated a UNH penalty corner that produced a dangerous chance off Knuttel's stick that was stopped by Vaandrager.
- One minute later, Johnson made another incredible save – this time with her glove – to deny Maddie Priestly.
OVERTIME
- The Wildcats and Catamounts entered OT tied at 2-2.
- UNH earned a penalty corner with 1:03 left on the clock. Ella Pratt (Denver, Colo.) made the insert to the top of the circle, where Knuttel passed the ball to Cookman on the right side and she blasted a shot into the cage for the overtime win by a 3-2 score.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Poulakis has scored three of her six goals this season on penalty strokes.
- She has scored a goal in back-to-back games and in four of the last five. Poulakis ranks third on the team in both goals (six) and points (14).
- Cookman extends her goal and point streaks to five games. She has seven goals and an assist for 15 points during the streak.
- Cookman ranks second on the team in both goals (nine) and points (22).
- This was UNH's first overtime fame of the season.
- The Wildcats have a 4-1 record the past five games.
