‘Cats Fall Short on Spread Respect Night in Conference Battle with Binghamton

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's basketball team fell short Wednesday night at Lundholm Gym, 66-64, as Binghamton came out with the win on Spread Respect night.
With the loss, UNH falls to 11-12 (6-5 AE) and Binghamton improves to 10-13 (6-4 AE).

FIRST HALF
- Graduate student Matt Herasme (Chester, N.Y.) started off the scoring for the 'Cats with a putback to make the score 2-2 at the 18:29 mark of the first half.
- Junior Kyree Brown (Oakland, Calif.) added a tough layup at the rim to cut the Binghamton lead to 5-4.
- After a few scoreless possessions for the Bearcats, Brown drove to the basket before hitting his defender with a great turnaround fade in the paint as the Wildcats led 8-5.
- Junior Clarence Daniels (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) built on the 'Cats momentum with a great steal and slam to increase the lead to 10-5.
- Junior Nick Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a catch and shoot three to increase UNH's lead to 6, 13-7. Johnson added on to his points with a great finish at the rim as the Wildcats lead 17-12, with 10:59 remaining in the first half.
- Herasme hit a pull-up three to give the 'Cats their largest lead of the game at 7, 21-14.
- Binghamton clawed their way back, putting themselves within one point of the lead, 23-22, with 5 minutes remaining.
- After a layup and five free throws from UNH, the two teams were neck and neck with a minute to play in the first half, 30-30.
- At the end of the opening frame, UNH trailed 33-30 against Binghamton.
SECOND HALF
- Once again, Herasme kicked off the scoring in the second half with a drive down the left lane for the finish over the defender.
- Freshman Ridvan Tutic (Novi Pazar, Serbia) had an impressive assist to a cutting Herasme who finished with a reverse layup for his second bucket of the half.
- The next possession, Tutic came up with the offensive rebound plus the putback layup to tie the game at 36-36.
- Daniels gave the Wildcats their first lead since the first half after knocking down a free throw as the 'Cats led 39-38 at the 15:00 minute mark of the second half.
- Daniels pulled up for a catch and shoot three-pointer to give UNH a 43-40 lead over Binghamton. Next possession down, great ball movement from the Wildcats led to a Johnson three from the corner.
- Johnson showed off his handles, creating separation to knock down his third three of the game. UNH leads 49-42 over Binghamton.
- After several defensive stops, UNH had their largest lead of the game, 54-44, thanks to another three-pointer from Johnson to set a new career-high.
- Binghamton responded in a big way, going on a 15-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 59-54 lead with 5:31 left to play in the game.
- The teams went back and forth over the final five minutes of the game with UNH trimming the deficit to just one point after a defensive stop led to a three from graduate student Jaxson Baker (Phoenix, Ariz.) with 29 seconds to play.
- Following a Binghamton layup plus the foul, Hersame netted two free throws to make it a two-point game with 14 seconds to play.
- After a well-fought battle, UNH fell in defeat, 66-64 against Binghamton.
NOTEWORTHY
- UNH leads the all-time series with Binghamton, holding a 28-23 record. The Wildcats are now 13-13 when hosting the Bearcats at Lundholm Gymnasium.
- This is the third consecutive loss for the 'Cats when they play Binghamton.
- Herasme finished with 18 points and five rebounds.
- Johnson finished with 17 points, three rebounds, and one steal with a career-high in three-pointers made (4).
- Daniels just missed the mark of a double-double, recording 15 points and nine rebounds.
- The Bearcats were led by Armon Harried who scored 23 points while grabbing seven rebounds.
NEXT UP
- The Wildcats return to action when they travel to Burlington, Vt. to take on Vermont, Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Patrick Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
- UNH returns to Lundholm Gymnasium on Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. to take on UMBC on ESPN3.
