Boutilier Breaks UNH Record in 2-1 Quarterfinal Loss at #11 Vermont

Grad Student and Captains Becomes UNH's All-Time Minutes Played Leader with 7465:26
BURLINGTON, Vt. – In her final game as a UNH Wildcat, grad student Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) made 30 saves and became the program leader in career minutes played, but the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was defeated 2-1 in overtime by 11th-ranked University of Vermont in Saturday's Hockey East quarterfinal at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Boutilier made seven saves in the first period, followed by 10 in the second, eight in the third and five in overtime to extend her career record for career saves to 3,492. The captain broke the UNH record for career minutes played 28 seconds into the game and finished her career at 7,465 minutes, 26 seconds.
Senior defenseman Rae Breton (Brighton, Ontario) scored UNH's goal to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 4:47 of the second period.
UVM's Natalie Mlynkova scored the game-tying goal at 8:06 of the second stanza and Theresa Schafzahl scored at 9:48 of OT to send the Catamounts to the semifinals. Jessie McPherson was credited with 29 saves, including six in the extra session.
UNH, the eighth seed that advanced out of Wednesday's opening round with a 6-3 win vs. College of the Holy Cross, ends the season at 12-21-3. Second-seeded UVM improved to 22-10-3.

FIRST PERIOD
- Both teams recorded seven shots in the scoreless opening 20 minutes.
- Vermont went on the first power play of the game at 10:45 but Boutilier stopped all four shots – including Mlynkova at the right post and Schafzahl off the rebound at the top of the crease – to backbone UNH's successful penalty kill.
- The Wildcats went on their first power play at 13:57 but McPherson stopped two shots to keep the score tied.
SECOND PERIOD
- New Hampshire recorded a 12-11 shot advantage and both teams scored a goal in the second stanza.
- A flurry of shots produced a 1-0 lead for the Wildcats at 4:47. McPherson stopped the initial blast from the right point off the stick of Brianna Legros (New Liskeard, Ontario). The UVM goalie then denied Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) and Kelly Harty (Billerica, Mass.) at the right doorstep. Off the third rebound, the puck trickled to the slot and Breton hammered a rising shot through traffic into the upper-right corner.
- UVM went back on the power play at 6:53 and leveled the score on Mlynkova's tally at 8:08.
THIRD PERIOD
- The Catamounts recorded an 8-5 shot advantage in the final 20 minutes of regulation.
OVERTIME
- UNH pressured in the opening 70 seconds of overtime, but McPherson turned aside shots by Marina Alvarez (Center Moriches, N.Y.) and Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec).
- UVM carried play for the next three minutes but Boutilier extended the game with three saves.
- Schafzahl scored on a shot from the left circle at 9:48 to end the game and UNH's season.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UVM finished with a 32-30 shot advantage.
- New Hampshire recorded a 28-26 edge in the faceoff circle.
- The Catamounts went 1-for-3 on the power play and UNH was 0-for-1.
- UNH was credited with 17 blocked shots and Vermont had 18.

- Boutilier extended her program record for career saves to 3,425.
- Boutilier became the record holder for career minutes (7465:26) by surpassing the mark set by Jen Huggon (2000-03) of 7396:05.
- Grad student defenseman Emily Rickwood (Brantford, Ontario) extended her school record for games played to 165. She was credited with three blocks
- Junior defenseman and captain Charli Kettyle (Perth, Ontario) led all skaters with six blocks.
- Junior forward Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) won a game-high 13 faceoffs and had a .565 faceoff win percentage (13 of 23).
- In addition to Boutilier, Martin and Rickwood, the end of the season marked end of UNH careers for senior goalie Nicky Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.), grad student forward Gabby Jones (Westfield, Mass.), and grad student forward Emily Pinto (Mulmur, Ontario).
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 37-18-8 lifetime record against Vermont and that includes 15-12-6 on the road.
- UVM won the regular-season series, 1-0-2; all three meetings were in the last two weekends of the regular season.
- This was the first ever postseason matchup between these programs.
