Verrier Records Two Points in 3-3 Tie vs. #11 Vermont

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore forward Shea Verrier (Reading, Mass.) recorded a goal and an assist to lead the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team to Friday afternoon's 3-3 tie against 11th-ranked University of Vermont at the Whittemore Center.
UVM won the shootout, 1-0, to earn an extra point in the Hockey East standings.
Verrier scored UNH's first goal and assisted on the Wildcats' third goal by graduate student forward and captain Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario). Junior forward Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) scored the other New Hampshire goal.
Graduate student goaltender and captain Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) was credited with 25 saves, including two in the five-minute overtime session.
UVM was led by Sini Karjalainen (one goal, two assists) and Theresa Schafzahl (one goal, one assist). Natalie Mlynkova scored the Catamounts' other goal and netted the only goal in the three-round shootout. Jessie McPherson made 18 saves and did not face a shot in OT.
UNH moves to 11-19-3 overall and 9-14-3 in Hockey East. Vermont is now 20-10-3, 15-8-3. These teams also skated to a 3-3 tie Feb. 10 at UVM; UNH won that shootout, 2-1.

FIRST PERIOD
- Vermont earned the first power play of the game at 5:58 and converted that skater advantage into Mlynkova's goal for a 1-0 lead at 7:37.
- UNH went on its first power play with 2:01 left in the period but did not record a shot on goal.
SECOND PERIOD
- Just over three minutes into the period, Verrier scored the Wildcats' first goal with assists by Kelly Harty (Billerica, Mass.) and Emily Rickwood (Brantford, Ontario). Rickwood initiated the sequence in the defensive zone by deflecting the puck off the boards. Harty skated onto the loose puck in the neutral zone to generate a breakaway. McPherson made the initial save, but Verrier banged the rebound under the crossbar to tie the score, 1-1, at 3:12.
- UNH immediately went on the power play as a result of a UVM penalty for slashing on Harty's breakaway down the slot. McPherson stopped both shots to backbone a successful Catamounts' penalty kill.
- Brooks scored the next goal on a rush down the right side at 10:05 to give UNH a 2-1 lead. Emily Pinto (Mulmur, Ontario), who advanced the puck from center ice, and Marina Alvarez (Center Moriches, N.Y.), who slipped a pass to Brooks at the blue line, set up the tally.
- UNH gained another power play 40 seconds later, but McPherson once again made a pair of saves.
THIRD PERIOD
- The Wildcats extended their lead to 3-1 on Martin's goal at 2:56. Verrier won the puck in the neutral zone to Kira Joudikis (LaSalle, Ontario), who advanced down the right wing and saucered a centering pass that Martin wristed into the net.
- Karjalainen lifted Vermont within 3-2 at 7:52 and Schafzahl netted a power-play goal at 15:46 – 37 seconds into the skater advantage – to tie the score.
OVERTIME
- UNH went on its four power play of the game 70 seconds into the extra session but the Wildcats do not record a shot before being whistled for interference at 2:07 to create a 4-on-4.
- Boutilier stopped two shots on the Catamounts' abbreviated power play to keep the score tied at 3.
- Neither team recorded a shot after both teams returned to full strength with 57 seconds on the clock.
SHOOTOUT
- UVM shot first in the best-of-three shootout.
- The score was tied, 0-0, through two rounds.
- Mlynkova scored in the top half of Round 3 and McPherson made the stop in the bottom half of the round to end the game.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Vermont finished with a 28-21 shot advantage and 33-17 edge in the faceoff circle.
- UVM was 2-for-3 on the power play while the Wildcats were 0-for-4.
- UNH was credited with blocking 13 attempted shots while UVM blocked 12 shots.

- It was the first goal of the season and 19th career for Martin.

- UNH skated to a 3-3 tie for the third consecutive game to mark the first time in program history the Wildcats have played to three ties in a row.
