
Thierus Records Two Points in 3-3 Tie at Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior forward Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec) recorded a goal and an assist Saturday as the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team skated to a 3-3 overtime tie against Merrimack College at Lawler Rink.
MC won the shootout, 2-0, in the best-of-three series to earn the extra point in the Hockey East standings.
Junior defenseman Kyla Bent (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and sophomore forward Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) scored UNH's other goals.
Senior goaltender Nicky Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.) made five saves and exited the game when the Warriors tied the game, 3-3, at 18:24 of the second period. Grad student and captain Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) stopped all 16 shots the rest of the way, including two in OT.
Emma Gorski was credited with 24 saves through overtime, then turned aside all three UNH shootout attempts (not credited as saves). Sophie McKinley, Teghan Inglis and Emily Oosterveld scored MC's goals, then Alexa Pongo and Madison Oelkers converted in the shootout.
UNH moves to 11-19-2 overall and 9-14-2 in Hockey East while MC is now 7-23-2, 4-19-2.

FIRST PERIOD
- New Hampshire recorded an 11-5 shot advantage in the opening 20 minutes to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
- MC struck first, however, on McKinley's goal at 2:40.
- UNH went on the first power play of the game at 4:07, but the Warriors limited the Wildcats to one shot during the two-minute skater advantage.
- Thiérus ripped a shot from the slot over Gorski's glove to tie the game, 1-1, at 6:53. Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario) was credited with the assist.
- Bent gave UNH a 2-1 lead at 12:51 when she blasted a shot from the top of the left circle through traffic into the cage. Thiérus, with a backhanded pass from behind the goal line on the right wing, and Annie Berry (Milton, Mass.) set up the goal.
SECOND PERIOD
- Both teams recorded four shots in the second stanza as Merrimack outscored the 'Cats 2-1 to pull even at 3.
- MC tied the score, 2-2, at 12:35 on a goal by Inglis.
- UNH went back in front, 3-2, at 14:57. On a power play, Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) intercepted a clearing attempt at the left point and Brooks corralled the loose puck in the high slot. Brooks advanced down the slot and snapped a wrister into the net.
- Oosterveld forged the third tie of the game, 3-3, at 18:24.
THIRD PERIOD
- Merrimack recorded a 13-5 shot advantage in the third period.
- The Warriors went on their first power play of the game at 1:02 but Boutilier made three saves to backbone a successful penalty kill and keep the score deadlocked.
- UNH started its fourth power play at 6:42, but Gorski stopped both shots on goal.
- Boutilier made three saves in the last three minutes of regulation to preserve the tie.
OVERTIME
- UNH generated a 7-2 shot advantage in the five minute extra session.
SHOOTOUT
- Merrimack led 1-0 and the end of the first round and 2-0 and the end of two rounds.
- Gorski then stopped UNH's third shootout attempt to give the Warriors the extra point in the standings.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH finished with a 27-24 shot advantage and 28-27 edge in the faceoff circle.
- The Wildcats were credited with 15 blocks and MC had eight.
- UNH was 1-for-4 on the power play while MC went 0-for-1.

- Rickwood led all skaters with four blocks.
