DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire athletic department, along with the men's ice hockey program, mourns the loss of former student-athlete and men's hockey captain Josh Ciocco (Atco, N.J.).
Josh was a forward on the Wildcats' hockey team from 2003-2007. He captained the team in his senior season and helped UNH to the NCAA tournament all four of his seasons in Durham.
He played in 136 career games for the Wildcats, registering 55 points, which included 22 goals and 33 assists. Ciocco recorded a career-high 20 points in his sophomore campaign in 42 contests, posting a career-high nine goals and 11 assists for the Wildcats during the 2004-05 season.
"Josh was one of the finest captains I had the opportunity to coach at UNH," said longtime UNH head coach Dick Umile. "His leadership and loyalty to his teammates and UNH Hockey were exceptional. He was a personal friend and will truly be missed by the many people he touched."
In 2005, he earned the team's Most Improved Player Award and in 2007 he was bestowed the Robert A. Kullen Award, given annually to the unsung hero of the program.
After graduating from New Hampshire in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in political science, Ciocco spent two seasons in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) with the Wheeling Nailers (2006-07) and the Fresno Falcons (2007-08). In 2010, Ciocco completed his Master's in Business Administration from UNH.
"Josh was one of us. Every time I saw him he wanted to talk about UNH Hockey," said UNH head coach Mike Souza. "On behalf of the entire UNH community I send our deepest condolences to Josh's family, friends, former teammates and the Merrimack Hockey family."
Ciocco served as an assistant coach for the Merrimack College men's hockey program over the last four seasons. Prior to Merrimack, Ciocco spent the previous two seasons as assistant coach at Brown University in ECAC Hockey. Ciocco spent three seasons (2013-16) at Alaska Anchorage, where he served as an assistant coach. Prior to his post at Anchorage, he served as assistant coach of Milton Academy.
A visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the LeRoy P. Wooster Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 White Horse Pike, Atco, N.J. 08004. A memorial service will begin at 7:00pm. It is strongly recommended that in lieu of flowers, please send donations in Josh Ciocco's honor to Merrimack College, 315 Turnpike Street, North Andover, MA 01845. Please place in memo (Josh Ciocco memorial).
On Tuesday, October 18 prior to the UNH at Merrimack game at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass., Josh will be recognized for his contributions to both schools, programs, and campuses. The pre-game memorial will be at Salvatore's, 354 Merrimack Street, Lawrence, Mass. from 3-6pm in the Coliseum Room.
