DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's cross country team placed second out of seven teams at the Pre-Conference Meet on the 5K course at College Woods on Saturday. Senior Lauren Dean (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.) led the Wildcats with a sixth-place finish, while sophomore Silvia Caddell (Salem, N.H.) was seventh and senior Kira Nolan (Richmond, Vt.) was ninth.
The meet featured several America East opponents as the teams prepare to compete at the America East Championships at College Woods on Friday, Oct. 29.
"I was happy with the way the course ran and was excited to have run a race that we are going to host the AE Championships on," said Robert Hoppler, UNH Director of Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country. "It was great to be competitive at the pre-meet out of seven teams. I thought the athletes we ran competed very well, particularly happy with the way Lauren Dean, Kira Nolan and Silvia Caddell competed." Lauren Dean led the Wildcats TEAM RESULTS:
Binghamton recorded first (Emily MacKay), second (Aziza Chigatayeva) and fifth (Sheriden Talada) place finishes for eight points after its first three runners. MacKay won the meet with a time of 17:21.8.
Vermont (Jane Leighton) and UAlbany (Tess Fitzmaurice) had runners finish third and fourth respectively, but the Wildcats answered with Dean tallying a time of 18:19.50 to place sixth, while Caddell was seventh at 18:23.50 as UNH had 13 total points.
Meaghan Alba of Vermont was eighth (18:25.1), but Nolan was right behind her with a time of 18:25.8, followed by Claire Kelly (18:33.0) of Vermont.
After UNH (22 points) and Vermont (21 points) each had three runners finish, the Catamounts had a one-point lead for second place. UAlbany had 32 points after its third runner (Noreen Guilfoyle) finished.
Binghamton clinched the win with 34 points when Carolyn Burnell (18:35.0) and Elisabeth van Tassell (18:39.60) placed 12th and 14th, respectively.
The Wildcats then moved into second place when freshman Anna Madden (Stratham, N.H.) was 16th with a time of 18:43.1 and graduate student Caroline Mahoney (Bedford, N.H.) was 17th with a time of 18:54.9 as UNH had a final total of 55 points.
Andie Cornish of Vermont gave the Catamounts a total of 39 points after four runners when she placed 18th (18:59.0), but graduate student Jennika Mannesto (Concord, N.H.) took points away from the Catamounts when she placed 22nd with a time of 19:10.5, right in front of Vermont's Veronica Bassett who was 23rd with a time of 19:12.0 giving the Catamounts a final score of 62 as UNH placed second overall and Vermont was third.
Freshman Alicia Veronneau (Williston, Vt.) was the seventh runner to finish for the Wildcats as she was 26th with a time of 19:21.8.
