Ava Boutilier wins UNH’s first national monthly award.
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – University of New Hampshire redshirt sophomore goaltender Ava Boutlier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) has been named the Women's Hockey Commissioners Association (WHCA) Goaltender of the Month, after leading the Wildcats to a 4-2-1 record in her starts in the month of February.
Her two shutouts on the month, along with her .969 save percentage and 0.99 goals-against average, led the Hockey East conference for the month of February. Her save percentage was the top percentage in the nation among goaltenders who played 75% or more of their team's minutes, and her goals-against was second-best in the nation. Boutilier currently ranks ninth in the nation in overall goals-against average (1.75), fifth in save percentage (.943), and is tied for sixth in the nation in shut outs on the year with six. Her season record stands currently at 13-9-2.
Boutilier returned to action in the month of February, after missing all but one game in January; her first game back was an away victory at Boston College, where she made 32 saves in her fifth shutout of the season in a 3-0 win. Her month was also highlighted by a 58 save performance in the quarterfinal series with Providence this past weekend, which included a 35-save shutout in the series-clinching game two victory, 1-0.
Boutilier is also the first UNH goaltender in at least 20 years to tally multiple points in a season, after her game-winning secondary assist in game one of the Hockey East Quarterfinals against Providence.
This award comes after Boutilier was awarded her eighth career Hockey East weekly award in her fourth Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season. She was also named the NCAA second star of the week on Tuesday morning. The award is UNH's first ever WHCA monthly honor after the association began honoring monthly award winners in the 2017-18 season.
Boutilier and the Wildcats are headed to the Hockey East Semifinals against the University of Connecticut this Saturday, March 7 at 3:30 P.M. at Merrimack College. The winner of the semifinal matchup advances to the championship game the following Sunday, March 8 at 2 P.M., facing either Northeastern or Maine. Both semifinal games and the championship game will be hosted at Lawler Rink in North Andover, Massachusetts, and will be broadcast live on NESN+.
