Freshman Ava Thewes stopped every shot she faced at Maine.
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – University of New Hampshire freshman goaltender Ava Thewes (Clarkston, Mich.) was named Defensive Player of the Week Monday morning by the Hockey East conference, after her performance against Maine this past Friday and Saturday.
Thewes, in her first season with the Wildcats, comes off two impressive performances this past weekend against Maine, as she made 26 saves in relief, allowing no goals.
On Friday afternoon, her second career appearance, Thewes entered the game in the third period and stopped all seven shots faced, as the Wildcats fell to Maine in game one. During Saturday afternoon's contest with the Black Bears, Thewes entered during the second period after Maine went up 2-1. She recorded 19 saves and allowed zero goals, backstopping the Wildcats to a 2-2 tie and a conference point. The decision was Thewes' first career tie.
This marks the ninth weekly award for New Hampshire women's hockey this season, and the first of Thewes' career. All three UNH goaltenders have now won a weekly award from the conference this season; Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) has claimed a Defensive Player of the Week and Co-Defensive Player award, and Nikki Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.) is a three-time Rookie of the Week.
Thewes and the Wildcats will return to action at home this Tuesday against Dartmouth for a 7 P.M. start time at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. It's 'Embrace New Hampshire Night' with a special t-shirt giveaway for the first fans through the door. For tickets and more information visit UNHWildcats.com/tickets or call 603-862-4000.
