'Cats Edged 9-8 at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team scored the first three goals of the game, but Iona College scored the last two to rally for a 9-8 victory Sunday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
Emily Curtis (Walpole, Mass.), Julia Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.) and Caroline Hernon (Hampton, N.H.) recorded two points apiece. Both Curtis and Neyland finished with two goals, while Hernon tallied a goal and an assist.
UNH goalkeeper Amanda Gottlieb (Canton, Conn.) entered the game at 18:21 of the second half with UNH trailing 7-6. She stopped two of the four shots on goal but was charged with the loss. Starting goalie Issy Torres (Elmhurst, Ill.) made six saves in 41:39 of action.
Iona was led offensively by Megan Collins (three assists), Madi Kochanek (two goals) and Sara Stewart (two goals). Elyse Darcy was credited with 14 saves.
UNH and Iona both have a 1-1 record.

FIRST HALF
- Neyland and Curtis scored unassisted goals at 28:21 and 26:40, respectively, to give New Hampshire a 2-0 lead.
- Hernon set up Riley Burns (Fayetteville, N.Y.) to extend the advantage to 3-0 at 26:03.
- That remained the score until Iona got into the scoring column on a player-down tally by Katherine Meyer at 14:14.
- Elizabeth Blanding (Pittsford, N.Y.) finished a feed from Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) to reestablished a three-goal margin of 4-1 at 6:30.
- The Gaels struck just 41 seconds later and again at 3:30 to cap the first-half scoring.
SECOND HALF
- Iona extended its run to three consecutive goals to tie the score 4-4 at 27:29.
- The Wildcats responded with goals 55 seconds apart by Lily Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.) at 25:59 and Neyland at 22:04 to go back in front, 6-4.
- The Gaels scored three consecutive goals – the last two in a span of 36 seconds – to take their first lead of the game, 7-6, at 18:21.
- Hernon converted a free position into a goal and tie score at 12:45.
- Curtis netted her second of the game, this time on a free-position shot, to give the 'Cats an 8-7 lead at 10:47.
- Iona's Emma Rippon made it five consecutive goals in the game scored on a free position to forge the fourth tie of the game, 8-8, at 7:31.
- Kochanek scored what proved to be the last goal when she gave the Gaels a 9-8 lead at 6:05.
- UNH's Abby Cranney (Amherst, N.H.) controlled the ensuing draw. She fired a shot wide of the cage, but the Wildcats retained possession and a shot by Ava Schroeder (Niskayuna, N.Y.) was stopped by Darcy. Possession once again remained with the 'Cats, however, and Neyland fired a shot saved by Darcy, who corralled a ground ball at 3:49 to end New Hampshire's extended offensive pressure.
- Both of UNH's last two possessions ended with a turnover – at 2:17 and 1:11.
- Iona held the ball for the last 71 seconds to secure the win.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- In addition to the two points, Hernon was also credited with five ground balls and four caused turnovers, both of which led all players. She also had one draw control.
- Neyland finished with a team-high four draw controls.
- Meghan Doyle (Pittsford, N.Y.), Taylor Dudek (Amherst, N.H.) and Michele Smith (Wantagh, N.Y.) each corralled three ground balls. Smith also had four caused turnovers and Dudek had two.
- Five 'Cats have scored a goal in both games this season.
- Taranto has tallied an assist in both games. She is the only Wildcat who can make that claim.
- Freshman attack Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) came off the bench to make her collegiate debut.
- Torres has started 19 consecutive games dating back to last year's season opener.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- New Hampshire recorded a 30-24 shot advantage that included a 22-17 edge in shots on goal. In the second half, however, the Gaels outshot their guests 17-11.
- Iona had the advantage in both ground balls (19-18) and draw controls (11-7).
- UNH committed fewer turnovers, 16-20. But the Gaels turned the ball over just six times in the second half in comparison to New Hampshire's eight.
- The Wildcats scored on 2 of 5 free-position shots. Iona was 3-for-8.
- UNH was 20-for-21 on clear attempts. Iona was 17 of 18.
SERIES HISTORY
- UNH has a 3-1 lifetime record against Iona. The Wildcats were 15-8 victors last year at Wildcat Stadium.
