Torres, Wildcats Fall to Catamounts, 44-42

Vermont tallies game-winning bucket with two seconds to play.
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team hosted the Vermont Catamounts for Education Day on Wednesday, February 12th. Despite leading by six points with just under two minutes to go, the Wildcats fell to the Catamounts by a score of 44-42.
Junior guard Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) set a new career high with 17 points, scoring UNH's first seven points of the contest to give the Wildcats an early first quarter lead. Torres got the ball on the final inbound with just under two seconds to go in regulation but couldn't get the game-tying layup to fall.
The 11 A.M. tip-off saw a crowd of 1,219, mostly comprised of students from Oyster River and Somersworth middle schools, who experienced a pre-game educational/athletic presentation by UNH staff members and student-athletes.
NEXT UP: The Wildcats are home for two in a row; after the Catamounts come to town, the Wildcats welcome the UMBC Retrievers to Lundholm Gym the following Saturday, February 15 at 12 P.M. HIGHLIGHTS:
- Torres' career-high 17 points came on 7-of-13 shooting, and a career-high three made 3-pointers. She also dished two assists on no turnovers and grabbed two steals.
- Junior forward Maggie Ahearn (Marshfield, Mass.) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds on the afternoon, and gave the Wildcats a boost in the third quarter with a scoring run; she finished with eight points, went 1-of-1 from behind the arc, and 1-of-2 at the free throw line.
- Senior guard Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) chipped in with seven points, along with five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 'Cats were on the board first with a three from Amanda Torres, and kept the Catamounts scoreless until 4:49 in the first quarter
- Torres increased the lead 7-2 at 2:49 in the first with a layup. She scored seven of the nine UNH points in the first quarter.
- At 8:42 of the second Vermont takes the lead for the first time of the game with a three , but Torres got a jumper on the next possession to take the lead back 11-10 in favor of the Wildcats.
- With just over two minutes left in the second, Vermont took their biggest lead of the game with two consecutive three-pointers to make the score 19-14 at halftime.
- Caroline Soucy buried a three at the beginning of the third but UVM responded right back to keep their five-point lead.
- After the media timeout in the third quarter Maggie Ahearn scored five consecutive points on three-pointer followed by a layup to make the score 26-30.
- Ahearn drove the basket for another layup in the final seconds of the third quarter to bring the score within one 32-31
- After a jumper from Helena Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France), the 'Cats took the lead 33-32 for the first time since the second quarter.
- Torres drains a three to extend UNH's scoring run to 10, and to boost their lead 36-32 with 5:47 remaining in the game.
- Senior Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) and sophomore Mariah Gonzales (Watkins Glen, N.Y.) held strong on defense causing a travel; the defensive stop kept the score 38-36.
- With 2:40 remaining, Storey went to the line and hit the first free throw to go up 39-36. She missed the second, but an offensive rebound by Ahearn kept the ball with UNH.
- Storey would attempt a jumper that didn't fall and the ensuing Vermont possession resulted in a turnover. Storey would then drain a three-pointer to give UNH a six-point lead, 42-36, with 1:23 to go in the fourth.
- With 45 seconds remaining in the game, UVM hit a three-pointer to make the score 42-39. The following UNH possession, the Wildcats turned the ball over.
- After a Vermont timeout, the Catamounts hit another three-pointer with six seconds to go, tying the game at 42-all.
- The Wildcats had the opportunity to inbound with six seconds left but a deadball foul gave Vermont the ball back, and a quick inbound to a layup put Vermont up 44-42.
- UNH had one more opportunity to claim victory but Torres' drive to the basket was met with hard defense and the shot couldn't fall.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Torres' previous career-high was set this season at UMBC when she tallied 16 points in a 72-63 road victory.
- Her previous career-high in three-pointers was two, which she notched twice in her career.
- This is the fifth game this season for UNH that Torres had led all scorers.
- The Wildcats and Catamounts split their 2019-20 season series 1-1.
- UNH's three-point percentage was the third-highest of the season (46.2), with two 50% performances against Hartford and CCSU.
