Wildcats Looking to Repeat Success at America East Championships

After a top-3 finish indoors, New Hampshire men’s track & field want to bring that success outdoors.
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's track & field team heads to the America East Outdoor Championship meet this Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5. The Wildcats were just edged out of the third place spot in last year's outdoor meet, but after an impressive indoor performance in February, UNH has its sights set on that spot.
"Expectations are pretty simple:" states head coach Jim Boulanger. "Perform at your seed level or better, and if all our athletes do that, we'll have a good day as a team. That's been our motto all year. We were third in indoors, if we could duplicate that, that would be absolutely wonderful. With Albany and Lowell at the top, it's going to take a lot for anyone in the conference to beat them."
The Wildcats come into championship weekend with most of their high seeds coming in the throwing events and the middle distance. "We need leadership in the throws and the middle distance, same as we have all year," says Boulanger.
That leadership comes from a throwing class of mainly juniors and seniors, led by junior Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) in the shot put and , and seniors Eric Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) Hani Traboulsi (Bensalem, Pa.), & Jon Chapman (Newport, R.I.). While those upperclassmen have been instrumental to the Wildcats' success in the shot put, discus, and hammer, freshman John King Jr. (Derry, N.H.) has contributed as the top javelin thrower for UNH this season.
In the middle distance, two athletes whom collected three gold medals each in the indoor championship return in the middle distance and relays, seniors Brett Hoerner (Manchester, N.H.) and William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.). They are joined by fifth-years Timothy Kenefick (Guilford, Conn.) and Thomas Harter (Hampton, N.H.) looking to cap off their UNH careers on a high note.
Other areas of point-scoring for UNH this season have been the jumps and hurdles, with a strong group of freshman and sophomores including returners Jordan Buckmire (Nashua, N.H.) & Michael Monahan (Tewksbury, Mass.), and freshmen Emannuel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.), & Nate Hobbs (Peabody, Mass.).
MEET INFO:
Date: Saturday, May 4 to Sunday, May 5
Start Times: Saturday – 10 A.M. | Sunday – 9 A.M.
Location: University Track & Field Complex – Albany, N.Y.
FROM THE COACH:
On the meet as a whole…
"Our goal is to perform at a high level, we had success there at Albany five years ago with good individual champions, and hopefully we'll do the same this weekend. It's the same thing as all year, the same framework as the rest of the season; our top kids have to do well, and everyone else has got to chip in with points of their own."
