Freshman Nate Hobbs shatters a 61 year old long jump record.
ALBANY, N.Y. – University of New Hampshire freshman jumper Nate Hobbs (Peabody, Mass.) broke a long-standing school record in the long jump, as the Wildcats track & field team competes at the America East Outdoor Championships hosted by the University at Albany this Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5.
Hobbs' long jump of 24 feet, 9.75 inches broke a school record that stood since 1958 by 9.75 inches (24' set by Arnold Fowler), and tied a 19 year old America East record. Hobbs broke his old personal best by 11 inches with the jump, and won his first career individual America East Championship. He becomes the first freshman to break a school record in the Jim Boulanger era, and the first Wildcat to win the America East outdoor long jump since 1989.
The Wildcats also crowned one other individual champion on day one of the weekend championships: Freshman John King Jr. (Derry, N.H.) won his first America East gold medal, winning the javelin throw with a new personal best distance of 206'6". That mark beat his old career best by almost 23 feet (183'9").
