Grasso scores game winner and Robinson records fourth shutout of the season.
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Patrick Grasso (Ankeny, Iowa) scored his team-best third game winner of the season and sophomore goalie Mike Robinson (Bedford, N.H.) recorded his fourth shutout of the year including making a save on a penalty shot with 6:15 left in the third period as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team defeated Vermont, 1-0, on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Wildcats improve 11-9-8 overall (7-6-5 HEA), while the Catamounts fall to 11-14-2 (4-11-2 HEA).
The Wildcats lead the season series versus the Catamounts, 2-0-0, with tonight's win and a 3-2 overtime victory at the Whittemore Center on Oct. 27. These two teams will conclude their three-game regular season series on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Gutterson Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
UNH is now tied for fifth place in the Hockey East standings with Northeastern with 19 points. The top eight teams qualify for the Hockey East Tournament. Go here to view the standings.
NEXT HOME GAMES: The Wildcats will host Northeastern for two games at the Whittemore Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23 at 7 p.m. The game on Friday is on NESNPLUS, while the contest on Saturday is on NESN. Hot dogs will be $1 dollar both nights. Friday is 80s Night and the fifth trading card set will be given away to the first 1,000 fans. Saturday is Star Wars Night as blue light sabers will be given away to the first 500 fans. Star Wars Troopers will be in attendance for photos. HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead at 4:07 of the first period when Grasso fired a shot past Vermont goalie Stefanos Lekkas and hit the left post and landed over the line. It was not called a goal right away but after video review the goal was awarded. Senior captain Marcus Vela (Burnaby, British Columbia) and junior Brendan van Riemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.) each posted an assist on the goal.
- With just 42 seconds left in the period freshman Angus Crookshank (North Vancouver, British Columbia) blasted a shot that ricocheted off the post as the game remained 1-0.
- The Wildcats outshot the Catamounts, 14-9.
- At 2:18 of the second period, senior Ara Nazarian (Boxford, Mass.) sent a shot that hit the post.
- The Catamounts outshot the Wildcats, 9-7, while each team went 0-1 on the power play.
- At 1:38 of the third period, the Catamounts almost tied the game but a shot by Alex Esposito ricocheted off the post.
- At 13:45, the Catamounts were awarded a penalty shot but the attempt by Max Kaufman was saved by Robinson to keep the score 1-0.
- With 43 seconds remaining the Catamounts went with the empty net but with 18 seconds remaining UVM was called for a penalty.
- Vermont was unable to score the equalizer for the 1-0 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Robinson made 29 saves to improve to 10-7-7 on the season, while Lekkas posted 26.
- UVM outshot UNH by a 29-27 margin.
- The Wildcats went 0-3 on the power play and the Catamounts went 0-2.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- The Wildcats are 9-2-3 over their last 14 games outscoring the opposition, 50-33, over this stretch.
- The shutout by Robinson was his fourth of the season.
