Wildcats Fall to Vermont, 4-1

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Johnny DeRoche posted two points for the Catamounts as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team fell to Vermont, 4-1, on Saturday evening at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Wildcats fall to 11-10-8 overall (7-7-5 HEA), while the Catamounts improve to 12-14-2 (5-11-2 HEA).
UNH is tied for fifth place in the Hockey East standings with Northeastern with 19 points. The top eight teams qualify for the Hockey East Tournament. View the standings.
UP NEXT: The Wildcats will host Northeastern for two games at the Whittemore Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23 at 7 p.m. The game on Friday is on NESNPLUS, while the contest on Saturday is on NESN. Hot dogs will be $1 dollar both nights. Friday is 80s Night and the fifth trading card set will be given away to the first 1,000 fans. Saturday is Star Wars Night as blue light sabers will be given away to the first 500 fans. Star Wars Troopers will be in attendance for photos. HOW IT HAPPENED
- At 14:32 of the first period, Vermont took a 1-0 lead as Liam Coughlin knocked in a rebound off a shot by Alex Esposito for a power play goal.
- UVM outshot UNH. 15-13, while the Wildcats went 0-1 on the power play and the Catamounts went 1-3.
- At 2:55 of the second period, the Wildcats went on a five-on-three power play for 59 seconds but UNH was unable to find the back of the net.
- UVM increased its lead to 2-0 at 6:10 when sophomore goalie Mike Robinson (Bedford, N.H.) made a save on a shot by Conor O'Neil, but Johnny DeRoche was there to send the rebound to the back of the net.
- The Catamounts moved out to a 3-0 advantage with a goal by Bryce Misley at 7:30 of the period.
- UVM outshot UNH by a 18-10 margin, while the Wildcats went 0-2 on the man-advantage.
- At 8:13 of the third period, senior captain Marcus Vela (Burnaby, British Columbia) tipped a shot by senior Richard Boyd (Delray Beach, Fla.) to the back of the net to cut the Vermont lead to 3-1.
- Vermont then took a 4-1 lead at 14:18 as Matt O'Donnell blasted a slap shot from the right faceoff circle to the back of the net.
- Neither team was able to score again for the 4-1 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Robinson made 37 saves to tie his career best, while Stafanos Lekkas posted 31.
- UVM outshot UNH by a 41-32 margin.
- The Wildcats went 0-4 on the power play and the Catamounts went 1-4.
