Brekke Paces 'Cats in Sweep of UMass Lowell

DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis.) scored 16 points and helped spur a fourth quarter rally to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to a 54-46 win over UMass Lowell on Wednesday night in Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats completed the season sweep of the River Hawks with the triumph. They won at UMass Lowell, 56-53, on Jan. 5.
UNH's next game is at Binghamton on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats improved to 5-18 overall and 2-8 in America East.
UMass Lowell dropped to 6-17 overall and is also 2-8 in the league.
The Wildcats played their ninth game without their leading scorer, junior forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine). Storey is out with a foot injury and is expected to miss at least six weeks.
Sophomore guard Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) had 12 points for the Wildcats.
Senior Brianna Rudolph scored 15 points to pace the River Hawks.
NEXT UP
The Wildcats hit the road to take on Binghamton on Saturday at 2 p.m.
They return home to play Vermont on Wednesday, Feb. 13 for their America East Spread Respect game.

HIGHLIGHTS
Brekke had nine points to key a 17-8 advantage for the Wildcats in the fourth quarter.
She made two of her four-pointers in the final period. She made four of her seven three-point attempts for the second consecutive game. It was the third time she has made four treys this season.
The Wildcats trailed 46-43 when they clamped down an already tight defensive effort and took control of the game.
Brekke made a couple of foul shots and then a three-pointer to take the lead at 48-46 with 2:28 left.
Junior guard Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) drove for a basket, Brekke hit a couple more free throws and Torres and Soucy hit free throws as the Wildcats pulled away.
UNH forced 23 turnovers for the game. The Wildcats also outrebounded UMass Lowell, 29-22.
Soucy finished with nine points and had six rebounds.

The River Hawks had a 14-13 edge after the first quarter.
The Wildcats scored the last five points of the second period to finish a 13-4 run and grab a 28-23 lead at the half.
Freshman forward Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) had eight points and three rebounds at the half. Brekke and Torres each had six points at the break.
The Wildcats made all six of their first half free throws and owned a 13-10 advantage in rebounds.
UMass Lowell scored the first of 10 points of the third quarter to move in front by five.
A three-pointer by freshman Kali Grimm (Norwood Young America, Minn.) and Torres layup helped cut UMass Lowell's lead to 38-37 after three periods.
The Wildcats trailed 46-45 with just under three minutes to play and finished the game on a 9-0 run for the win.
