DANBURY, Conn. – Junior defender Josh Bauer(Bedford, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire men's soccer program has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Marc Hubbard has been named the ECAC Coach of the Year. This is the second straight season Bauer has been named the Defensive Player of the Year. Bauer and graduate student goalkeeper Alejandro Robles (Monterey, Mexico) earned All-ECAC honors.
Bauer, who just recently received first team All-Northeast Region honors, is one of 15 semifinalists for the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy. The Hermann Trophy is awarded annually to the nation's top college soccer player. This is the first time the Wildcats have had a player named a semifinalist for the prestigious award.
Bauer was named the America East Defender of the Year for the second straight season. He also won the America East Tournament MVP for the second consecutive year as he is only the second player to accomplish that honor. Also this season, Bauer was named to the All-America East first team for the second consecutive year. This season he had four goals and five assists for 13 points. He has also been strong in the classroom as he was named to the 2019 America East All-Academic Team. Bauer has played in 57 career games with 10 goals and 10 assists for 30 points. Coach Hubbard has posted a 62-22-13 record over his five seasons as head coach at UNH. The Wildcats have recorded five straight 10 or more win seasons which is the first time that has been done in program history. He has also brought the school its first two America East Tournament championships (2018 and 2019) and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2017, 2018 and 2019).
This season the Wildcats were led by Hubbard, associate head coach Rich Weinrebe, assistant coach Nick Thompson, goalkeeper coach Dave Williams and director of soccer operations Brad Campion. Robles also just recently received first team All-Northeast Region honors. He was named the America East Goalkeeper of the Year and received first team All-America East honors. The Wildcats concluded the season with a 15-2-3 (.825) record, posting the best winning percentage in program history and tying the school record for wins. The Wildcats won the America East Co-Regular Season championship, earning the title for only the second time in program history. Then UNH captured its second straight America East Tournament championship, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. The 1-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round was the second time in the last three years the Wildcats have won a NCAA Tournament game.
The Wildcats only allowed 11 goals all season outscoring their opposition, 39-11. UNH's 0.528 team goals against average is ranked third in the nation. UNH was ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Poll every week except the first week reaching a season-best No. 13 ranking.
