41 saves in a shutout of #9 Providence gives Smith her fifth career weekly accolade.
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – University of New Hampshire senior captain Kyra Smith (Littleton, Colo.) has been named this week's Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week after her performance against #9 Providence.
Smith bounced back from a rough outing Friday night in which UNH was shut out, 4-0, with a career-high 41 saves on Saturday, backstopping the 'Cats to a 5-0 victory over Providence to split the weekend series. With her performance on Saturday, she put her weekend stats to 69 saves for a .958 save percentage, and three goals allowed for a goals-against of 1.53.
It was Smith's second win over a ranked team this season, as she stopped 22 shots against #10 Boston College earlier this month in a 2-1 victory. The shutout over #9 Providence was just the second time the Friars were blanked this season, dating all the way back to October 26, 2018 at #8 Northeastern (2-0).
This is Smith's first weekly award of the season and the fifth of her career. Smith was named back-to-back defensive player of the week in the 2017-18 season.
Smith and the Wildcats take on the Holy Cross Crusaders in a home-and-home series this weekend, beginning at home at the Whittemore Center on Saturday, January 26 at 2 P.M. The home contest will be UNH's Hockey Fights Cancer game. For tickets and more information, visit UNHWildcats.com or call (603)862-4000.
