Schafer Scores Three Goals in 14-8 Loss to UAlbany

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior attack Krissy Schafer (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored three goals on Senior Day, but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 14-8 by the University at Albany in Saturday afternoon's game at Bremner Field.
Schafer led four Wildcats who recorded multiple points. Julia Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.), Teagan Northrup (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Anna Vogt (Stratham, N.H.) all tallied a goal and an assist. Neyland also had three draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover.
Starting goalie Kate Clancy (Barrington, R.I.) made five saves and exited the game at halftime with UNH trailing 7-3. Amanda Gottlieb (Canton, Conn.) also recorded five saves and allowed seven goals. Cat Sennott (Westford, Mass.) finished with three ground ball and three caused turnovers.
UAlbany was led offensively by Sam Tortora (5g, 3a), Emma Powlin (3g, 1a), Kaylee Rickert (3g, 1a) and Kendra Harbinger (3g). Erin Leghart was credited with 11 saves and four GBs.
UNH moves to 6-9 overall and 4-2 in America East. Albany extended its win streak to eight games to improve to 8-7, 6-0.

- UNH returns to action April 28 (12 p.m.) for its regular-season finale at Binghamton University.
- New Hampshire has secured a berth in the 2018 America East Championship tournament. The semifinals are May 4 at the site of the top seed.
THE DIFFERENCE
- UAlbany scored the first three goals of the game and the Wildcats never got closer than two goals the rest of the way.
- UAlbany dominated UNH in draw controls, 16-8. The Great Danes' 7-4 edge in the first half helped build the 7-3 halftime lead, and the 9-4 second-half advantage helped keep the 'Cats at bay.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UAlbany struck first at 24:48 left of the first half on Tortora's unassisted goal.
- The visitors started the game on a 3-0 run following goals by Emma Powlin at 21:12 and Tortora at 20:04.
- UNH got on the board at 18:07 when Neyland, from behind the net, found Schafer cutting down the middle of the fan to trim the deficit to 3-1.
- After three straight goals by UAlbany – two from Tortora and one Rickert – the score moved to 6-1 at 11:03.
- The Wildcats answered with a goal by Schafer at 10:02 that was set up by Northup to make the score 6-2.
- UAlbany scored at 5:07 on a goal by Kendra Harbinger to extend the lead to 7-2.
- UNH answered on Northrup's goal at 1:54 to once again close within four goals. On a free position from outside the left hash, she beat the shot clock, which had two seconds remaining.
- Powlin scored her second goal of the game at 29:11 of the second half to give the Great Danes an 8-3 advantage.
- The Wildcats scored 55 seconds later (at 28:16) when Vogt took it in by herself, cutting the deficit to 8-4.
- Two straight goals from Rickert increased the Great Danes' lead 10-4 at 25:30.
- At 22:23, UNH answered when Vogt, from behind the net, found Catherine Sexton (Niskayuna, N.Y.) cutting down the left side to make the score 10-5.
- Two minuets later (20:22), Neyland netted an unassisted goal to lift the 'Cats within 10-6.
- Tortora's fifth goal of the game reestablished a five-goal margin, 11-6, at 15:24.
- Schafer scored her third goal of the game, this time on a free position, at 14:16 to narrow the gap to four goals, 11-7.
- UAlbany's Harbinger scored consecutive goals to build a 13-7 lead with 13:59 left.
- Carly Wooters (White Plains, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the game to make the score 13-8 at 7:04.
- Powlin struck again at 4:58 to close the scoring.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Schafer extended her goal and point streaks to 13 games; she has 35 points, all on goals, during the streak. She has scored a goal in 14 of 15 games overall this season.
- Northrup has a seven-game point streak, including a goal in five straight, with 15 points (5g, 10a) in that span. Northrup has tallied a point in 12 of 15 games.
- Neyland's point streak is at six games with 12 goals and three assists for 15 points. She has recorded a point in 12 of 15 games.
- Wooters has 81 career goals and 17 assists for 98 career points.
- UNH head coach Sarah Albrecht paid tribute to the seven-member Class of 2018, which played its last home game. The seniors are: Clancy, Schafer, Cat Sennott, Rebecca Sennott, Lizzie Suschana, Ashley Watson and Wooters. The program also recognized Sarah Lambert, a two-year letterwinner who hung up her cleats but has been invaluable the last two years as team manager.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The shot total was even at 30.
