Brekke's Four 3-Pointers Lead 'Cats vs. Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Freshman guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wisc.) nailed four three-pointers – one in each period – for her 12 points to lead the University of New Hampshire in its season opener, a 70-47 loss at the University of Minnesota, in front of a crowd of 14,625 in Williams Arena on Friday night.
The game marked the coaching debut of Lindsay Whalen, a Golden Gopher legend as a player and just retired from a standout WNBA career.
The Wildcats finish off a two-game road trip with a game at North Dakota State on Sunday at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
Junior guard Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) led the Wildcats in rebounding with a career-high eight and scored eight points. Brekke made four of her nine three-point attempts and also had four rebounds.
Junior forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) had seven points, five rebounds, three steals and a career-high five assists in her first game in a year and a half. She missed all of last season rehabilitating from surgery.

The Wildcats play at North Dakota State on Sunday at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
The Bison lost at home to Creighton, 86-51, Friday to even their record at 1-1. They beat Mayville State in their opener, 49-43.
Michelle Gaislerova led North Dakota State with 17 points against Creighton.
The Wildcats play at Brown on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
UNH plays Sacred Heart in its home opener Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Sacred Heart game is one of two UNH home games in November. The Wildcats face Bryant at home on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m.
HIGHLIGHTS
The young Wildcats started two juniors, two sophomores and a freshman. Between them they had started 26 games for the Wildcats. Storey started 17 games as a freshman in the 2015-16 season and sophomore guard Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) started nine games last season.
Torres had a career-high six assists against Minnesota and added four points and two steals.
Sophomore forward Maggie Ahearn (Marshfield, Mass.) started along with Storey, Torres, Soucy and Brekke. Ahearn had eight points and four rebounds. She sat out last season as a transfer from Providence College.
Freshman forward Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) came off the bench and contributed six points and three rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers opened a 16-11 lead after one period and expanded it to 31-20 at the half.
Brekke made the two Wildcat three-pointers in the first half and led them in scoring with six points.
Soucy led UNH with six rebounds in the first half.
Torres, Soucy and Maggie Ahearn each had four points in the half.
A Soucy layup with 7:25 left in the third quarter cut Minnesota's lead to 34-25.
The Golden Gophers began to pull away from there and upped the margin to 48-29 with a period to go. They outscored UNH 22-18 in the fourth quarter.
