FARGO, North Dakota – Juniors Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) and Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) led the team in scoring, but the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team came up short at North Dakota State University, 56-51, on Sunday evening.

The Wildcats fell to 0-2 on their season-opening road trip. They lost their season opener at the University of Minnesota on Friday night.

UNH plays at Brown on Thursday night before playing host to Sacred Heart in its home opener on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium.

Storey, a forward, led the Wildcats with 16 points against North Dakota State and Soucy, a guard, had a career-high 13.

North Dakota State is now 2-1.

NEXT UP

The Wildcats face Brown University on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Providence.

Brown takes a 1-1 record into a game at Boston University on Monday. The Bears beat Central Connecticut State, 68-63, at home in their opener and lost to Bryant, 75-57, on Thursday.

UNH plays Sacred Heart in its home opener Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium.

The Sacred Heart game is one of two UNH home games in November. The Wildcats face Bryant at home on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m.

HIGHLIGHTS

Storey and Soucy accounted for well over half of UNH's points. Both Wildcats returned to the floor in Friday's opener after missing significant time to injury and rehabilitation.

Soucy missed all of last season after having surgery. An injury knocked Soucy out of the lineup last season and she missed almost all of America East Conference play.

Between them, Storey and Soucy scored UNH's last nine and 15 of its last 16 points over the final period and a half.

When North Dakota State went ahead 50-44 with 4:14 to go, Storey hit a couple of free throws and Soucy a foul shot and layup for 50-49. Storey had a layup with five seconds left that pulled UNH within 54-51.

Storey had six rebounds and matched her career best with three blocks.

Soucy, who is 5-foot-9, led the Wildcats in rebounds with eight for the second straight game. her career high in rebounds before this weekend was four. She also had a career-best three assists and tied her career best with three steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats led 10-9 at the end of the first period and stretched the edge to 27-23 at the half.

Storey had 14 points in the first half, 10 of those in the second period. She also had four rebounds in the first half.

Soucy had eight of UNH's 14 points in the third quarter. Her layup with 3:35 left in the third put UNH up 37-32. The Bison were able to cut the lead to 41-40 at the end of three.

North Dakota State moved in front and led 50-44 with 4:14 to go in the fourth period before UNH rallied late. It was a one-point game with three minutes left and UNH was within three with five to go.
