A RIVALRY RENEWED! UNH and Providence Launch Alumni Fund Raising Competition

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire and Providence College women's hockey programs are excited to announce an alumni-giving challenge to benefit the fundraising efforts of each respective program.
The fundraising campaign seeks to capitalize on the rivalry and longtime comradery between the women's hockey programs at UNH and PC. The concept of the alumni giving challenge was conceived as a way to recognize the history of each program's commitment to the sport of women's ice hockey, as well as a tribute to the storied rivalry between each program.
How it works
The winner be announced during the UNH vs. Providence women's ice hockey game on Saturday, January 20 at the Whittemore Center Arena in Durham, NH.
The Rivalry
Both UNH and Providence were among the first in the nation to field a women's collegiate hockey team. For decades, the two programs were at the top echelon of the sport and were heated rivals on the ice.
The Wildcats and the Friars have met 149 times in their history, dating all the way back to 1977. From 1985 to 1999, every ECAC women's championship game featured Providence, New Hampshire, or both. The two teams met nine times in ECAC tournament play, including six championship games. One such game was the longest women's hockey game ever played. It took five overtimes in March of 1996 before UNH finally prevailed, 3-2. The rivalry spilled over into the formation of the women's Hockey East conference, seeing six playoff matchups including four UNH-Providence Hockey East Championship games.
Dina (Solimini) Rufo, UNH 1996 – "The minute I stepped foot on campus in Durham, it was clear that Providence was our rival. The 'hatred' was instantly instilled and was part of the culture and passion of being a Wildcat. We admired their accomplishments, but we never wanted to lose to them…"
Jane Ford, Providence 1983 – "We always had an extra pep in our step when facing UNH. It was an easy game to get up for, and the rivalry made you want to skate harder, faster, and leave everything on the ice. We respected each other, but absolutely hated losing to them."
