The Wildcats cut the Merrimack lead to one goal twice in the second period.
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – University of New Hampshire women's hockey, trying to snap a two-game losing streak, fell to conference foe Merrimack on Wednesday evening despite a strong second period from the Wildcats, who were down by two goals twice and fought back to make it a game.
Senior defenseman Amy Schlagel (Blaine, Minn.) saw the Warriors score a short-handed goal, and immediately took the puck up ice following the face off and scored a power play goal just 10 seconds later, to cut a Merrimack lead to 2-1. After another quick goal from the Warriors, sophomore center Abby Chapman (Beverly Hills, Mich.) tallied her first goal of the season to cut the lead to 3-2 by the second intermission.
Despite several scoring chances in the third, the Wildcats resorted to pulling the goaltender in the final two minutes, which resulted in a Merrimack empty-net goal to seal the game.
The Wildcats have now lost three games in a row for the first time all season, and it ties up the season series with Merrimack, 1-1-1.
