Schlagel Drafted by Buffalo, Fedeski by Boston
MANHATTAN, N.Y. –Amy Schlagel (Blaine, Minn.) and Julia Fedeski (Algonquin Highlands, Ontario), senior defensemen on the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, were selected in the 2017 National Women's Hockey League Draft that was held Thursday night.
Schlagel became the first active UNH Wildcat to be drafted by an NWHL team when the Buffalo Beauts selected her with the team's final pick of the draft, which was 18th overall in Round 5. The Beauts were the 2017 Isobel Cup Champions.
Fedeski's name was called with the last overall pick of the 2017 draft – 20th overall – by the Boston Pride, which advanced to the Isobel Cup final last year.
In the 2016-17 season with UNH, Schlagel was named to the New England Hockey Writers Women's Division I All-Star Team and Hockey East All-Star First Team; she was also the recipient of New Hampshire's Colleen Coyne Award, which is presented to the team's top defensive player.
Schlagel is an outstanding two-way player. In the offensive zone, she recorded 13 goals and 10 assists for 23 points in 35 games, and that included 8-10-18 in 24 Hockey East games. With those numbers, she finished the year ranked No. 1 in the nation in goals by a defenseman and No. 9 in defenseman scoring (0.66 ppg) as well as seventh in power-play goals (six).
Schlagel was second on the team in both goals and points, as well as shots (119). She also scored a team-high six power-play goals, ranked second in plus/minus and tied for second in game-winning goals.
Fedeski led last year's Wildcats in blocked shots with 69, a number that ranked fifth in Hockey East. She developed into an offensive weapon, especially on the power play, where she floated between the point and in front of the net. Fedeski ranked second on the squad in assists (16) and third in points (22), as well as tied for second in power-play goals (five) and fifth in shots (74). In 18 league games, she tallied 18 points on four goals and 14 assists.
Fedeski recorded a point in 15 of 35 games, and that included a six-game point streak to end the regular season in which she compiled 10 points, all on assists; the six-game point streak matched the longest by a Wildcat in 2016-17 and the six-game assist streak was the longest by a 'Cat since 2009-10. She recorded a personal-best three assists for a career-high three points at UConn (Feb. 17), and also tallied two helpers against both Boston University (Feb. 10) and UConn (Feb. 18).
With Schlagel and Fedeski patrolling the blue line, New Hampshire is a team on the rise. Last year's 14 wins were the highest total since the 2012-13 team finished with that total, and the 11 wins in Hockey East marked the most in league action since the 2009-10 squad had 13.
The NWHL is the first professional women's hockey league in North America. The inaugural season began October 11, 2015 with the Founding Four: Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale and New York Riveters.
