Wildcats Ready for America East Championships

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's swimming and diving team is set to compete at the 2017 America East Swimming & Diving Championships, starting Thursday, Feb. 9 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Mass.
The four-day event kicks off with the 1-meter dive, followed by the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Allison Stefanelli (Loudonville, N.Y.) is the top-seeded diver of all America East schools as her highest score of the year is 257.24 points, achieved on Oct. 28 against Central Connecticut State University. Hailee Miller (Milton, Mass.), Erin Cullather (Highland Park, Ill.) and Sarah Haggerty (Burlington, Vt.) will also be competing in the event.
UNH also has the top seed in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of seven minutes, 31.88 seconds. The first day concludes with the 200-yard medley relay in which the Wildcats are seeded third.
Day two starts with the preliminaries 10 a.m. and the finals at 5 p.m. with the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Brittany Moffatt (Cedar Falls, Iowa) is the number four seed with her best result coming at the Boston University Invitational (Nov. 18) to a time of 5:03.15. Senior Sarah Broderick (Haverhill, Mass.), freshman Corinne Carbone (Medway, Mass.), junior Bridget Miller (Longmeadow, Mass.), sophomore Madeline Murphy (Liverpool, N.Y.), freshman Julia Rucker (Salem, N.H.), senior Lauren Marsden (Annapolis, Md.) and freshman Sarah Wydra (Dover, N.H.) are also slated to compete in the event.
Event five, the 200-yard individual medley, features Colby Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) as the second seed with a time of 2:06.67 and Carbone as the third seed with a time of 2:06.91. Olver, Moffatt, Vivienne El-Sibay (Munich, Germany), Emily Giambastini (Walnut Creek, Calif.), Rucker and Wydra will compete in the event as well.
The sixth event will be the 50-yard freestyle with junior Liza Baykova (Moscow, Russia) as the top seed of 23.03 seconds. She achieved her time at the Boston University Invitational. Harvey, along with Broderick, Murphy, Kaitlin Cahill (Troy, N.Y.), Milana Evsten (Stockholm, Sweden) and Annmarie Picinich (Fair Lawn, N.J.) are the other UNH competitors. Day two concludes with the 200-yard freestyle relay. New Hampshire is the second seed with a benchmark of 1:37.21.
Saturday, day three, starts with the 3-meter dive with Stefanelli as the top seed. She achieved her high score of 269.84 against CCSU. Miller and Cullather are the second and third seeds while Haggerty is seeded ninth. The 400-yard individual medley is the ninth event and features Carbone as the first seed. Her benchmark time was 4:27.61 achieved at the BU Invitational. Sarah Olver (Durham, N.H.), Bridget Miller and Marsden will also compete in the event. The 100-yard butterfly follows with Harvey as the second seed with a time of 56.41 seconds. El-Sibay, Picinich and Giambastini round out the Wildcats in the fly. Baykova is again the top seed, this time in the 200-yard freestyle. Her top time is 1:47.71 which is also an NCAA-B cut time, set at the BU Invitational. Broderick, Carbone, Moffatt, Cahill and Murphy will also swim the event.
The 100-yard breaststroke has Evsten as the top UNH swimmer being the third seed with a time of 1:05.23. Evsten, who joined the team in January, achieved her mark at Niagara. Rucker and Olver are the two additional 'Cats competing in the event. In the 100-yard backstroke, Harvey comes in as the 11th seed with a time (58.83) just about 1.5 seconds behind number one. Broderick, Carbone, Giambastini, Wydra and Picinich are also slated to compete. The day concludes with the 400-yard medley relay in which UNH has the top time in America East this season. Their seed time is 3:50.59.
The final day of competition begins with the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle. Moffatt is seeded third overall with a time of 10:32.63. Bridget Miller and Marsden will also swim in the event. Carbone and Broderick are the sixth and seventh seeds in the 200-yard backstroke while Giambastini, Wydra and Picinich additionally swim the event.
Baykova has her third top-overall seed of the championships in the 100-yard freestyle with her NCAA-B cut time of 49.68 seconds. She is the only swimmer in the conference to tag the wall in under 50 seconds this season. She is joined by Broderick, Cahill, Carbone, Murphy and Picinich in the event. The 18th event of the meet, the 200-yard breaststroke, has Olver as the sixth seed overall with a time of 2:22.69. Also swimming in the event will be Rucker and Evsten. Event 19 is the 200-yard butterfly and has Harvey and El-Sibay as the second and third seeds. Carbone and Picinich will compete in the event. The final race of the championships is the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Wildcats are seeded third.
