HOW IT HAPPENED
The Catamounts took a 1-0 lead at 1:37 of the first period on a one-time shot by Rob Hamilton. He received a pass inside the faceoff circle to the right of Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.) from Brian Bowen and put it into the far side of the net.
The Wildcats responded with a goal at 6:57 of the first period by Fregona, his second of the year. Jamie Hill (Glassboro, N.J.) dished the puck out to Matias Cleland (Longmont, Colo.) who backhanded a pass to Fregona to the left of Stefanos Lekkas. Fregona skated in front of the net and backhanded a shot into the goal.
Mario Puskarich gave the Catamounts a 2-1 lead at 11:23 of the first period with his ninth goal of the season. Puskarich got the puck from Anthony Petruzzelli and fired a shot from the bottom of the faceoff circle into the corner of the net.
Hill tallied his second point of the night with his third goal of the season at 12:02 to level the score at 2-2. Cameron Marks (North Vancouver, British Columbia) stripped a Catamount of the puck and sent a pass to Hill who skated into the UVM zone with it along the boards. Hill flicked a wrister at the net that beat Lekkas to light the lamp.
The Catamounts were able to take a 3-2 lead at 3:48 of the second period with a goal by Travis Blanleil. He received the puck in the slot of the UNH zone and fired a wrist shot that found the left corner of the net.
Petruzzelli registered his second point of the night as he scored for Vermont at 5:56 of the second period. He put the puck away off a rebound that was shot by Jake Massie. Tirone made the initial save as he was sprawled out on his stomach, but Petruzzelli flipped the rebound into the goal.
Puskarich scored his second goal of the night at 3:55 of the third period to put the Catamounts up 5-2. He got the puck from Ori Abramson and fired a shot from the faceoff circle.
Salvaggio brought the score to 5-3 at 15:51 of the third period as he scored his 18th goal of the season and second of the weekend. Tyler Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) started the play as he dove and poked the puck up ice to Michael McNicholas (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) in the neutral zone. McNicholas found Salvaggio skating in and played a pass to the tape of his stick. Salvaggio beat Lekkas with a backhanded shot.
