Curtis Honored in Pregame Ceremony on Senior Night

DURHAM, N.H. – Julia Fedeski (Algonquin Highlands, Ontario), Marie-Jo Pelletier (Dalhousie, New Brunswick) and Amy Schlagel (Blaine, Minn.) recorded two points apiece, but the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was edged 4-3 by Boston University on Friday night at the Whittemore Center.

UNH, which started the day in a three-way tie for fourth place with Boston University and Providence College, is now 11-16-2 overall and 9-10-2 in Hockey East, which puts the Wildcats in sixth place. BU sits in fourth place at 14-10-6, 9-8-4.

The defensive trio of Fedeski, Pelletier and Schlagel combined to produce UNH's two power play goals. Schlagel and Pelletier both finished with a goal and an assist while Fedeski matched her career highs in both assists and points with two helpers. Pelletier's two points equaled her personal best.

UNH goalie Hilary Cashin (Fredericton, New Brunswick) finished with 20 saves. BU counterpart Victoria Hanson stopped 25 shots, including all 14 shots she faced in the third period.

Abby Cook and Samantha Sutherland both tallied a goal and an assist for the Terriers.

GAME RECAP

BU quickly took a 1-0 lead when Abby Cook's shot from the right point sailed into the cage at 1:32 of the first period.
UNH converted a power play into a goal and 1-1 tie at 10:48 of the opening frame. Fedeski's initial shot from the high slot was blocked in the low slot by a BU defenseman's skate. Pelletier poked the puck back to Schlagel, who was streaking down the slot and wristed a shot into the net.
BU regained the lead, 2-1, less than three minutes later when Rebecca Leslie skated onto a loose puck in the neutral zone to generate a breakaway opportunity. She hesitated in the slot to let a sliding UNH defender pass by, then snapped a shot inside the right post at 13:21.
The Terriers were whistled for a penalty 22 seconds into the second period, and the 'Cats once again capitalized on the skater advantage to tie the score, 2-2, less than a minute into the stanza. Fedeski settled the puck behind Cashin in the defensive zone. Schlagel skated onto the puck and advanced along the left boards into the corner, where she slipped a pass in front of the net and the oncoming Pelletier lifted a shot under the crossbar at 54 seconds.
UNH struck again at 2:43 to quickly transform what had been a one-goal deficit into a 3-2 lead. Meghara McManus (Milton, Mass.) corralled a loose puck in the neutral zone to lead a 2-on-1 rush with Nicole Dunbar (Coto de Caza, Calif.). McManus advanced into the right circle and fired a shot into the upper-left corner.
BU netted goals two minutes apart in the middle of the second stanza to regain the lead, 4-3. Natasza Tarnowski collected Sutherland's pass on her backhand in the slot and she feathered a shot inside the left post to tie the score, 3-3, at 9:46. The Terriers potted a power-play goal at 11:44 when Cook's blast from the right point sailed over the crossbar and caromed off the end boards to the left post, where Sutherland tucked the puck into the open side.
UNH pulled Cashin with 1:26 remaining in regulation to give the 'Cats a two-skater advantage. New Hampshire sustained pressure, but could not get another shot on target the rest of the way.

Prior to the start of the game, Jonna Curtis (Elk River, Minn.) was honored in a Senior Day tribute. The lone UNH senior leads the team in goals (17), assists (15) and points (32) this season.
Curtis has 50 goals and 46 assists for 96 points in 116 career games.
This was just the second loss this season for UNH when the 'Cats score three or more goals in a game (10-2-1 record in 13 games).
UNH is now 3-1-0 when scoring multiple power-play goals.
