Boyd’s Goal Lifts #13 Wildcats over #9 Providence, 1-0

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior defenseman Richard Boyd (Delray Beach, Fla.) scored his first goal of the season early in the first period, and that was all the No. 13 University of New Hampshire men's hockey team needed to take down conference foe No. 9 Providence, 1-0 on Saturday evening.
Boyd was assisted by junior forward Ara Nazarian (Boxford, Mass.) for his fifth assist of the season. Senior goaltender Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.) made 24 saves in his fourth shutout of the season, the 10th of his career; his record on the season is now 8-5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Boyd scored early as Nazarian sent him a pass from the right faceoff circle to the point where Boyd settled it and fired a wrist shot that got past Providence goaltender Hayden Hawkey. The Wildcats led 1-0 7:12 into the first period.
- Neither team scored in the second period despite each having two chances on the power play.
- The Friars pulled their goaltender with 1:45 remaining in the third, and managed to get three shots on net, but all were saved by Tirone, who made nine saves in the third period. The Wildcats cleared the puck in the final 10 seconds to clinch the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UNH held the slight advantage in the shots column, outshooting Providence 26-24.
- Both teams had six penalties for 12 penalty minutes and both teams were 0-5 on the power play.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Boyd's goal was the third of his career, and his first career game-winning goal.
- Tirone's fourth shutout of the season leads Hockey East, with the next closest goalies posting two.
- With the win, the Wildcats are now 5-3-0 at home.
- The win is UNH's third win against a top 10 team this season, and their first win against a ranked opponent since the October 7 game against UMass Lowell, who were ranked No. 5.
