Wildcats Looking to Repeat at New England Championships
10/6/2017 3:13:00 PM | Women's Cross Country
The Wildcats have won three of the last four New England Cross Country championships.
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's cross country team is preparing for the New England Championship meet this weekend at Franklin Park in Boston.
This comes after the team took seventh in another event at Franklin Park, the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown, and senior Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) finished in first place in the event for the second straight year.
The Wildcats will be going into the weekend without Purrier in action, and look to repeat their success as the 'Cats have won three of the last four New England Championship cross country meets.
The Wildcats had three runners in the top 10, including sophomore Meg Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) who finished ninth in last years' New England Championships. Champagne ran the course in 18:06.6.
Also looking to make an impact in the race is Shannon Murdock (Exeter, N.H.), who most recently competed in the Coast to Coast invitational, finishing in 43rd place.
Other key runners include Riley Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) who was the top UNH finisher in their opening home meet with Providence and Holy Cross, finishing in fifth place with a time of 18:29.64. Alyson Messina (Plymouth, Mass.) also participated in the Coast to Coast Invitational, rounding out UNH's scoring runners in 94th with a time of 18:50.

FROM THE COACH:
" This meet gives us a chance to run in a competitive, championship meet, and compete for a top spot. I feel good about what we did at coast to coast, I feel good with our training, we're going back to a course we know well now. It's all about building into championship season. It's all building towards the final goal of running well in championship meets. And this is another step to achieving that goal."
