Men’s Soccer Downs Bryant 3-1 in Season Opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore forward Alex Valencia (Tracey, Calif.) recorded three points on a goal and an assist as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team defeated Bryant University on the road, 3-1, Friday afternoon in the 2016 season opener. Redshirt freshman Kyle Brewster (New Hampton, N.H.) and rookie Ben Gleditsch (Oslo, Norway) also scored for the 'Cats.
New Hampshire takes on Siena College in the home opener on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. on Bremner Field.
Brewster tallied the first goal of the game in the 41st minute of the opening half to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Valencia dished a pass over to Brewster who fired a low shot that hit the near post of the goal and bounced past Bulldog keeper Nick Stewart and into the net. It was Brewster's first goal of his career in his first collegiate game. With 35 second left in the first half, the 'Cats gained a 2-0 advantage on a goal by Valencia. Senior co-captain Chris Wingate (Hovik, Norway) set up the play with a pass to Valencia into the box. He then ripped a hard, low shot past Stewart for the goal.
At the end of the first half, the Wildcats were up, 2-0. UNH outshot Bryant by a total of 8-2 in the first half. Junior keeper Andrew Pesci (Windham, N.H.) made a save on the only shot he faced in the half.
Gleditsch opened up the second half with a goal in his first collegiate game to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead in the 57th minute. The freshman picked up the ball in the box and blasted a shot past Stewart.
Bryant got on the board in the 83rd minute of play with a goal by Chris McCormick on a free kick. His shot from just outside of the box hit the left post and bounced in past the outstretched arms of Pesci.
At the final whistle, the Wildcats won by a score of 3-1. UNH outshot Bryant 11-5 in the game while tallying the only two corner kicks of the contest. Pesci made a total of two saves on three shots faced to earn the win and bring his record to 1-0-0 on the year. Stewart made three saves on six shots faced as his record falls to 0-1-0.
