Junior Center Scored 10 Points in 4th Quarter to Fuel Comeback
DURHAM, N.H. – Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a game-high 18 points to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to Wednesday afternoon's 56-52 victory against Central Connecticut University at Lundholm Gym.
UNH won its second straight game and has won 7 of 8 to improve to 8-3 overall and 5-1 at home. CCSU lost its eighth consecutive game to fall to 1-10.
The Wildcats trailed 41-40 through three quarters, but Pogue netted 10 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the floor in the fourth quarter to fuel the comeback victory. With the score tied at 52, Pogue's jumper from the top of the key put UNH back in front by two points.
Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) was sent to the foul line for the bonus with 16.8 seconds on the clock and made both free throws to extend the advantage to 56-52. At the other end of the court, Kiana Patterson – already 5-for-11 from 3-point range, quickly hoisted a 3-point shot. The ball clanged off the rim and CCSU pulled down the offensive rebound but UNH's swarming defense did not allow another shot attempt until the final buzzer sounded.
UNH outscored CCSU 16-11 in the fourth quarter by shooting 7 of 15 from the floor while holding the visitors to 3-for-10. The Wildcats, who were outrebounded 30-26 through three quarters, recorded a 10-6 edge on the boards in the final frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNH missed its first nine field goal attempts, which allowed CCSU to build a 7-0 lead midway through the first period. Kristen Anderson (Greene, Maine), making her second consecutive start, drilled a 3-pointer to get the Wildcats into the scoring column at 4:09.
The Blue Devils led 10-5 at the end of one quarter as the teams combined to shoot 5 of 28 (17.9%) from the floor and 2-for-6 from the foul line.
CCSU matched its largest lead of the game at 15-8 early in the second period, but the Wildcats responded with a 7-0 run to forge the first tie of the game; Anderson hit her third 3-pointer of the game – second from the left corner – during the spurt and a layup by Kat Fogarty (Westminster, Mass.) tied it up at 6:42.
UNH fell behind 21-15 before going on an 8-0 to take its first lead of the game, 23-21, on a jumper by Caroline Soucy (Beverly, Mass.) at 2:42. That lead was short-lived, however, as Kiana Patterson connected from beyond the 3-point line at the other end of the court to give the visitors a 24-23 lead.
The Wildcats had four chances to regain the lead before halftime but neither team scored the last two minutes of the second quarter.
Patterson's fourth 3-pointer of the game once again matched CCSU's largest lead, 34-27, at 8:40 of the third quarter.
Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) hit back-to-back layups to trim the deficit to 34-31 and force another Blue Devils' timeout at 4:53. Fogarty's three-point play tied the score at 4:05. Lai connected on a jumper from the right elbow to cap a 13-4 run that gave UNH a 40-38 lead with 1:12 remaining in the third.
Once again, however, CCSU made a 3-pointer on its next possession – this time by Andi Lydon – to regain the lead, 41-40, and that was the score heading into the fourth quarter.
New Hampshire took its third lead of the game on Pogue's layup to open the final frame, and Soucy's transition layup extended the advantage to three points, 44-41, at 9:10.
There were three more ties at 44, 46 and 48 before Pogue scored from the right blocks to put UNH back in front, 50-48. Lydon's 3-pointer gave CCSU its last lead of the game, 51-50. Aliza Simpson responded with a jumper and a single free throw by Lydon knotted the score one last time, 52-52, at 2:55.
New Hampshire held CCSU scoreless the final 2:55 of the game.
