NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The University of New Hampshire women's basketball team was unable to finish its non-conference schedule on a high note Saturday afternoon, suffering a 63-46 setback to Yale University at John J. Lee Amphitheater.
UNH's overall record slips to 6-7 on the season. Yale snaps a two-game skid and improves to 9-7.
Sophomore center Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) paced the Wildcats with nine points and a game-high six rebounds. She also added two blocks. Senior guard Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) and freshman forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) each turned in eight points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Peyton Booth (Wadsworth, Ohio) and Storey earned their first-ever starts for New Hampshire.
The Wildcats shot 16 of 44 (36.4 percent) from the floor and 4 of 11 (36.4 percent) from beyond the arc. UNH edged out Yale on the boards, outrebounding the opposition by a 35-33 margin.
Three Bulldogs eclipsed double figures in the scoring column. Senior guard Whitney Wyckoff led all scorers with 14 points. She also chipped in four rebounds, three steals and a block. Sophomore guard Tamara Simpson and senior guard Nyasha Sarju registered 13 points apiece.
Yale converted 23 of 59 (39.0 percent) shots from the floor and 7 of 21 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range. The Bulldogs tallied 15 steals, which translated into 20 points off of turnovers.
The home team engineered a strong start out of the chute. Simpson started the scoring with a layup on the opening possession. After a Belanger score, the Bulldogs rattled off nine straight points, capped off by a Sarju 3-pointer at 6:01. UNH temporarily stopped the run with a Belanger second-chance basket. However, Yale managed to match treys from Kristen Anderson (Greene, Maine) and Belanger as the home team led 20-12 after 10 minutes played.
The Bulldogs opened the second quarter with a fastbreak score from Mary Ann Santucci. However, the 'Cats retaliated with a flurry of baskets down low from Storey to whittle the Bulldogs' lead down to 25-19 with 4:11 left in the frame. Yale and New Hampshire traded scores as the visitors entered the locker room, trailing 31-24.
UNH look poised to take its first lead of the game as jumpers from Anderson and Pogue narrowed Yale's advantage to 31-28 to start the third quarter. However, the home team countered with an 18-0 surge, highlighted by triples from Simpson and Megan McIntyre. Yale's 6 minute, 44 second-run opened a 47-28 lead with 2:21 remaining in the stanza. Booth snapped the Bulldogs' run by knocking down a 3-pointer from the top of the arc. A Storey layup was sandwiched by scores from the home team as New Hampshire looked up at a 53-33 deficit into the final quarter of play.
Pogue tried to jumpstart the New Hampshire offense as she poured in consecutive baskets. Following a made free throw by Belanger, Yale upped its lead to 20 again as Sarji drained a 3-pointer from the left wing. Despite, late scores from guards Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) and Emily Peters (Lindstrom, Minn.) the Bulldogs preserved its double-digit lead for the remainder of play to cement the 63-46 decision.
New Hampshire opens America East play at Binghamton University on Saturday, Jan. 9 (4 p.m.), capping off a season-long five-game road swing.
