Belanger Notches a Double-Double, but Women's Hoops Drops AE Opener at Binghamton, 51-50

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, but the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team came up just short and lost a heartbreaker at Binghamton University, 51-50, in its America East opener at Binghamton University on Saturday.
The Wildcats dropped to 6-8 overall with their sixth straight loss. Binghamton improved to 6-9 overall and evened its league record at 1-1.
Rebecca Carmody got a rebound and scored on an inside putback at the buzzer for the winning basket.
Down 47-45 with 1:20 to play, UNH rallied to take the lead.
Senior Corinne Coia (North Smithfield, R.I.) scored on a turnaround in the lane to tie the game with 50 seconds left.
At the other end of the floor, Peyton Booth (Wadsworth, Ohio) blocked an Imani Walker layup bid.
Redshirt freshman Emily Peters (Lindstrom, Minn.) made one of her two free throws for UNH and sophomore Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) got an offensive rebound off the miss.
Belanger was fouled and made two foul shots for a 50-47 lead with 16.3 seconds left to play.
Booth fouled Walker on a three-point attempt with 7.6 seconds to play. Walker made the first two and Binghamton collected the rebound after the miss.
Kim Albrecht's three-pointer was off the mark in the closing seconds, but Carmody got the rebound and scored.
New Hampshire plays Albany in its conference home opener on Wednesday at noon in Lundholm Gymnasium for Education Day. Tickets are available by calling 603-862-4000.
Albany has won the last four America East tournament championships.
Playing without injured guards Kristen Anderson (Greene, Maine) and Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.), UNH led 11-10 after the first period.
Binghamton took a 25-21 lead into halftime on the strength of a 15-8 second period.
Coia led a balanced UNH attack with six points in the first half.
Belanger scored 11 of her points in the third period and UNH had a 20-16 edge in the quarter to even things up at 41-41 with 10 minutes left to play.
Pogue had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats.
Coia finished with eight points and three rebounds. Peters had seven points and four rebounds.
Watkins led Binghamton with 20 points and nine rebounds. Alyssa James had 12 points and nine rebounds and Albrecht added 13 points.
Each team had 37 rebounds in the game.
UNH made 19 of its 50 field goals (38 percent). The Wildcats made one of their eight three-pointers and 11 of 15 foul shots.
Binghamton was 19-for-56 from the field (33.9 percent) and made three of eight three-pointers and 10 of 12 foul shots.
