STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Senior Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) paced the Wildcats with a career-high 32 points as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team fell to Stony Brook, 63-54, Saturday afternoon at the IFCU Arena.
The Wildcats drop to 6-10 overall and 0-3 in America East play. The Seawolves improve to 12-5 overall and remain undefeated with a 4-0 record in the conference.
New Hampshire returns home for another conference matchup with the University of Maine on Monday, Jan. 18. The game is set for 3 p.m. and will air on ESPN3.
Belanger was only one rebound shy of recording her fourth double-double on the season. She totaled 32 points, nine rebounds, and three steals in her 40 minutes of play. She also went 9-10 from the charity stripe. Freshman Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) tallied eight points and a career-high eight rebounds.
Stony Brook had three players score in double-figures. Freshman Ogechi Anyagaligbo recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Davion Wingate and senior Brittany Snow had 18 and 16 points apiece.
The game started slowly from a scoring standpoint for both teams. The Wildcats were able to get a few defensive stops including blocks from Storey and sophomore Peyton Booth (Wadsworth, Ohio). Senior Corinne Coia (North Smithfield, R.I.) came off the bench with 5:08 remaining in the quarter and knocked down two key jumpers. At the end of the quarter, UNH trailed 19-11.
Belanger opened up the second-quarter scoring with a three-pointer. It was her first of two in the period. Stony Brook missed several shots, including five treys in the quarter, allowing the Wildcats to close the Seawolves' lead to 25-22.
Storey came out strong in the third quarter, putting home two layups right off the bat for the Wildcats. The teams traded baskets until Stony Brook went on a 7-0 run, starting with 5:37 remaining in the quarter. This helped the Seawolves extend the lead to 11 by the end of the quarter (45-34).
Belanger, who tallied 15 of the 20 Wildcat points in the final quarter, began the final frame tear by registering the first four baskets for the Wildcats. Her fourth basket at 6:22 came after a tenacious team effort crashing the boards. She took an initial shot and then three different Wildcats proceeded to pull down offensive rebounds before kicking the ball back to her for the bucket. That basket pulled UNH within four, the closest they would get before eventually falling 63-54.
