Belanger, Pogue Hit Double Figures In Loss To Maine

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior guard Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) and sophomore center Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) combined for 33 points and 17 rebounds, but the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team fell short against Maine, 62-52, in Lundholm Gymnasium in a Martin Luther King Day matinee on Monday afternoon.
UNH fell to 6-11 overall and 0-4 in America East with its ninth straight loss. Maine improved to 13-7 and 4-1.

Belanger led UNH with 17 points, including a six-for-six performance at the foul line, and had eight rebounds. Pogue made eight of her 12 field goals and finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. Belanger and Pogue were each in double figures for the third time in the last four games.
Maine senior Liz Wood was nine-for-11 from the field, including three-for-three on three pointers, and led all scorers with 23 points. Junior teammate Sigi Koizar chipped in with 20 points.
For the second consecutive game, Belanger directed a UNH fourth period rally. She had 15 of UNH's fourth quarter points in a 63-54 loss at Stony Brook on Saturday.
She had 13 of the team's 21 points in the fourth period on Monday. Pogue had the other eight points.
A Wood three-pointer put Maine up 45-31 just 23 seconds into the final period.
Belanger answered with four free throws in a couple of trips to the foul line and then added a basket with a steal and layup.
Pogue banked in a shot off a nice move and UNH had the lead down to 45-39 with 6:56 to play.
Wood came right back with a three-pointer, Lauren Bodine added another trey for Maine and then Wood hit again from the top of the key and the Black Bears were back in control of the game.
Maine was up 13-4 in the first period when Belanger and Pogue hit consecutive baskets late to cut the margin to 13-8 at the break.
A Sam Sabino three-pointer sliced Maine's edge to 21-18 with 6:30 left in the second period. The Black Bears closed out the half with a 10-4 run for a 31-22 advantage at the break.
Pogue led the Wildcats with six points and four rebounds in the first half.
UNH made nine of its 10 free throws in the game and was three-for-15 in its three-point attempts.
The Wildcats (20-for-44 for 45.5 percent) had a better field goal percentage than Maine (24-for-60 for 40 percent), but the Black Bears took 16 more shots in the game. UNH had 17 turnovers to Maine's 10. UNH had a 31-30 edge in rebounds.
