Men’s Track & Field Opens 2016 Season with First Place Against Maine

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior D'Mahl McFadden (Penacook, N.H.) placed first overall in three events to lead the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team to a first place finish over the University of Maine, Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats scored 101 points compared to the Black Bears' 80 points. UNH opened their indoor track season at the Paul Sweet Oval in Durham.
McFadden ran the 55-meter dash in 6.70 seconds, .07 seconds faster than the next runner. The New Hampshire native followed that up with a 22.97 time in the 200-meter dash and was the only athlete to crack the 23-second threshold. Lastly, the senior placed first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.80 seconds.
Junior Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) jumpstarted his season with gold medals in both the shot put and weight throw. A distance of 67 feet, 4.00 inches earned him the weight throw medal as no other competitor tossed the weight more than 49 feet. In the shot put, Shanahan just out threw sophomore Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) by 3.75 inches as UNH took the top-two distances.
The 4x800-meter relay team featuring juniors Jacob Kittredge (Amherst, N.H.), Nathan Kittredge (Amherst, N.H.), Christopher Poggi (Dover, N.H.) and freshman William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.) placed first overall in the race with a time of 8:09.28. Poggi also won the 800-meter run for his second gold medal on the afternoon with a time of 1:54.17.
Junior Joseph Poggi (Dover, N.H.) placed first overall in the 1000-meter race, breaking the tape in 2:34.00 to start his season. In the 400-meter dash junior Ross Hardy (North Andover, Mass.) broke the tape in 50.97 for the gold medal.
In the high jump, sophomore Keelan McCoole (Bedford, N.H.) leapt to a height of 6 feet, 6.75 inches to tie for first place.
On Friday, Dec. 4 the Heptathlon events began while they concluded on Saturday. Sophomore Joel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) placed first overall in the high jump, long jump and shot put to propel himself to a first place finish with 4,417 points.
The Wildcats will compete Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Jay Carisella Invitational (10 a.m.) in Boston.
