Game Notes: Women's Hockey Plays Home-and-Home Series vs. Merrimack

The Games
The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team welcomes Merrimack College to the Whittemore Center for the first time in program history when the teams face off Dec. 4 (7 p.m.) in Durham. UNH and Merrimack conclude the season series Dec. 5 (4 p.m.) at Lawler Rink.
The Matchup
Friday will be the second lifetime meeting between New Hampshire and Merrimack.
In the inaugural meeting between these programs Oct. 17, 2015 at Lawler Rink, UNH recorded a 35-12 shot advantage but Merrimack won 2-1. Paige Voight gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead with 73 seconds left in the first period and Jackie Pieper extended the advantage to 2-0 with a shorthanded tally 96 seconds into the third period. Jonna Curtis finished a feed from Taylor Wenczkowski to lift the Wildcats within 2-1 at 12:02.
The Wildcats pulled goaltender Ashley Wilkes in favor of an extra skater with 47 seconds left in regulation and called time out with 26.6 seconds on the clock. UNH's Amy Boucher won the ensuing faceoff and a shot from the point by Sara Carlson was stopped by MC goaltender Samantha Ridgewell. Boucher won another faceoff and this time Amy Schlagel blasted a shot that was blocked by a Warrior skater. With eight seconds to play, Boucher won yet another faceoff and Curtis sent a shot wide. Time expired before the 'Cats could get another shot on goal.
Wilkes made half of her 10 saves in the third period, while Ridgewell stopped 34 shots overall, including 15 in the first period.
UNH went 0-for-2 on the power play. Merrimack was 0-for-1.
The State of New Hampshire
UNH has a 4-13-1 overall record with a 3-8-0 mark in Hockey East, 1-6-0 at home and 3-7-1 on the road; the Wildcats are 1-4-0 in league home games and 2-4-0 in league road games.
Last weekend, the Wildcats traveled to Troy, N.Y. for a two-game series against Rensselaer and returned home with a 3-3 tie and 2-1 victory. The two-game unbeaten streak is the team's longest of the season.
Six losses have been to nationally-ranked teams, including five opponents ranked in the top 4 in the country (three vs. #2 Boston College; two vs. #4 Clarkson).
New Hampshire went 3-6-1 in November with three losses to nationally-ranked teams.
In six games spanning Oct. 23 to Nov. 8, UNH's offense scored 19 goals – between 2-4 goals every game – for an average of 3.16 per game.
Overall, the 'Cats are averaging 1.89 goals per game while allowing 3.50 gpg. The opposition has scored 5+ goals five times (none in the past six games), whereas UNH has a season-high four goals three times (but lost two of those games).
The Wildcats have been outscored 63-34 with a breakdown of 17-12 in the first, 21-13 in the second and 25-9 in the third.
UNH is minus-29 in scoring but plus-28 in shots at 499-471; the 'Cats are +23 (159-136) in the third period.
'Cat Nips
Sophomore forward Amy Boucher recorded a pair of multiple-point games last weekend at Rensselaer to finish with four points (2g, 2a). Boucher recorded her first career multiple-assist game with two assists in Friday's 3-3 tie; she also had a +2 rating and won 13 of 20 faceoffs. One day later, she matched her career high of two points for the second time in as many days by equaling her personal best of two goals.
Freshman goaltender Kyra Smith stopped 38 of 42 shots in the two-game series at Rensselaer for a 1.92 GAA and .905 save percentage. She recorded 15 the 2-1 win and made 23 stops in the 3-3 tie. Smith backboned the penalty kill to a perfect 5-for-5 effort in the two games.
Smith has started eight consecutive games spanning back to the Nov. 8 game at UConn.
Senior forward Haley Breedlove had her first career multiple-assist effort by setting up both goals in Saturday's 2-1 win. The two points matched her personal best.
Senior defenseman and captain Sara Carlson tallied two assists last Friday to match her career highs in both assists and points.
Junior forward Jonna Curtis recorded her fifth multiple point of the season Friday with a goal and an assist.
Junior forward and alternate captain Cassandra Vilgrain recorded a point in both games with a goal Friday and assist Saturday.
Sophomore defenseman Amy Schlagel also tallied a point in both games vs. RPI with a goal Friday and assist Saturday.
Working Overtime
New Hampshire played its only overtime game of the season last Friday at Rensselaer and skated to a 3-3 tie against the Engineers. UNH is unbeaten in its last five overtime games with a 1-0-4 record. the Wildcats were 1-0-3 in OT last season.
On a Hot Streak
Amy Boucher has recorded two points three of the last four games and has a point in 6 of 10 with a total of four multiple-point efforts in that span. She tallied her first career multiple-goal game Nov. 7 at Providence College and matched that Nov. 21 at home vs. PC as well as Nov. 28 at Rensselaer.
Boucher has climbed to the top of the team leaderboard in goals (eight) and is second in points (11). She also leads the team in both power-play goals (four) and shooting percentage (.163), and ranks second in shots (49).
The Last 5
UNH has a 2-2-1 record the past five games with a 1-1-0 mark at home and 1-1-1 on the road. The Wildcats are averaging 1.80 goals per game and are allowing 2.80 gpg. The power play has been impressive at 35.7% (5 of 14), while the penalty kill is at 80.0% (12 of 15).
Amy Boucher is the top point producer with six (4g, 2a) the last five games. Sara Carlson is next with four (4a). Kyra Smith is 2-2-1 with a 2.57 GAA and .896 save percentage.
November Numbers
New Hampshire went 3-6-1 in November but closed the month with a two-game unbeaten streak (1-0-1). Amy Boucher averaged one point per game with seven goals and three assists for 10 points in 10 games. Jonna Curtis was the next top point producer with nine (2g, 7a). In goal, Kyra Smith started the last eight games of the month and had a 3-4-1 record with a 2.85 GAA and .893 save percentage.
Conference Call
In 11 Hockey East league games, Jonna Curtis has tallied two goals and seven assists for nine points. Amy Boucher is next with six points on five goals and an assist. Three skaters – Julia Fedeski and Sara Carlson – are tied for third with four points.
In goal, Kyra Smith is 2-3-0 with a 3.01 GAA and .889 save percentage. Ashley Wilkes is 0-1-0 with a 2.03 GAA and .833 save percentage. Vilma Vaattovaara has a 1-3-0 record in four games with a 3.88 GAA and .872 save percentage. Hilary Cashin is 0-1-0 with a 3.82 GAA and .815 save percentage in two games.
That Was Close
Five of UNH's 16 games have been decided by one goal and the Wildcats have a 2-3 record in those contests. Most recently, UNH closed the month of November with a 2-1 road win against Rensselaer.
New Hampshire opened November with back-to-back one-goal games with a 5-4 loss at Providence and 2-1 win at UConn. Earlier in the season, UNH lost consecutive one-goal games to Syracuse (3-2 on Oct. 10) and at Merrimack College (2-1 on Oct. 17).
Special Teams
New Hampshire's power play has produced a goal three of the last four games; the Wildcats netted a PPG both games last weekend at Rensselaer (2-for-5 overall) and was a perfect 3-for-3 in the 3-2 win vs. Providence College on Nov. 21.
UNH's penalty kill was perfect last weekend in five shorthanded situations against the Engineers. Prior to that, the opponents' power play scored in five consecutive games at 7-for-17 (41.2%). The 'Cats have allowed a power-play goal in 12 of 18 games.
Overall, UNH is 10-for-56 (17.9%) on the power play and 42 of 56 (75.0%) on the penalty kill.
First Strike
UNH has scored the game's first goal eight times, including three consecutive games Nov. 1-8 against Boston University, Providence College and UConn. The Wildcats have a 4-4-0 record when taking a 1-0 lead.
Two-Goal Lead
UNH held two-goal leads three consecutive games at Vermont (Oct. 30), vs. Boston U. (Nov. 1) and at Providence (Nov. 7), but the Wildcats won just one of those games. New Hampshire upended UVM, 4-0. The 'Cats held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 against BU but lost 5-3. UNH also had a pair of two-goal leads (2-0 and 4-2) at PC but lost 5-4.
The Wildcats built a 3-0 lead against those Friars on Nov. 21 and fended them off for a 3-2 win at the Whitt.
Most recently, UNH took a 3-1 lead into the third period Nov. 27 at Rensselaer, but the Engineers struck twice in the third period and the teams skated to a 3-3 tie.
What Just Happened
UNH went 1-0-1 last weekend with a 3-3 tie and 2-1 victory at Rensselaer. Last Friday, UNH scored three consecutive goals to build a 3-1 lead, but the Engineers netted a pair of third-period goals to rally for the tie.
One day later, the Wildcats struck late in the first period and took that 1-0 lead into the final frame; RPI tied the score at 6:37, but the 'Cats regained the lead at 11:41 fended off the Engineers.
What's Next
New Hampshire returns to action early next week with a Dec. 8 (7 p.m.) home game against intrastate rival Dartmouth College. UNH then travels to fourth-ranked Quinnipiac University (Dec. 11; 7 p.m.) and plays host to Yale University (Dec. 13; 2 p.m.) before breaking for exams and the holidays.
'Cat Captain
Senior defenseman Sara Carlson reprises her role as team captain in the 2015-16 season. Last year, Carlson made her debut as a defenseman for a three-game stretch in late October, then ended the year on the blue line all three games of the Hockey East quarterfinal – that's a total of six games.
Carlson opened the 2015-16 season on the blue line paired with sophomore defenseman Amy Schlagel and has been there all 18 games. Carlson ranks second on the team in assists (eight) and is third in points (10). She is atop the team leaderboard in blocked shots (38).
Carlson has matched her career high of two assists – and two points – in two of the last four games, most recently Nov. 27 at Rensselaer. She also tallied two assists Nov. 21 vs. Providence and Oct. 10 against Syracuse.
She recorded a point three consecutive games with a goal (Oct. 23) and assist (Oct. 24) at Clarkson followed by a goal at UVM.
In 122 career games, Carlson has compiled 13 goals and 33 assists for 46 points.
The Alternates
Senior forward Heather Kashman and junior forward Cassandra Vilgrain are designated as team leaders by their distinction as alternate captains. Kashman was also an alternate captain last year.
Vilgrain has recorded five points (2g, 3a) in 18 games this season; she was a winger on the second line the initial 16 games before shifting to the top line with Jonna Curtis and Amy Boucher for the November series at RPI.
The move paid immediate dividends for Vilgrain, who recorded a point both games against the Engineers with a goal Friday and an assist Saturday. It marked the first time this season she recorded a point in consecutive games.
She recorded her first points of the season by matching her career high of two assists at Vermont on Oct. 30. She broke into the scoring column with a goal Nov. 8 at UConn.
Kashman has been sidelined by injury the entire 2015-16 season.
Top Of The List
Junior forward Jonna Curtis leads the team in assists (10), points (17) and shots (75), and she ranks second in goals with seven. She recorded her fifth multiple-point game of the season with a goal and an assist Nov. 27 at RPI, and she has tallied a point in 10 of 18 games overall.
Curtis recorded a six-game point streak and five-game assist streak from Oct. 23 to Nov. 8; she tallied four goals and seven assists for 11 points during the streak.
Curtis matched her personal best of two assists for the second consecutive game Nov. 7 at Providence College. She tallied a goal and two assists the previous game vs. Boston University (Nov. 1).
Curtis tallied two goals and an assist Oct. 24 at Clarkson; the two goals match her personal best.
Senior Class
The senior class includes the aforementioned captain, Sara Carlson, and alternate captain Heather Kashman as well as forwards Haley Breedlove, Nicoline Jensen and Margo Lund, and goaltender Vilma Vaattovaara.
Breedlove enters the weekend with four points, all on assists. She recorded her first career multiple-assist game with two at Rensselaer on Nov. 28, and the two points matched her personal best. Breedlove tallied a single assist against both Syracuse (Oct. 10) and Vermont (Oct. 30).
Jensen centered the top line the first three games this season and has centered the second line the past 15 games. Jensen has three points with a goal and two assists. She has been one of the top centers in the faceoff circle at 118 of 229 (.515 win percentage) – all three of those numbers rank second on the team. Jensen won 20 of 29 draws in a two-game series against Providence on Nov. 21-22, and that included 9 of 11 in the latter game.
Lund skated as the right wing on UNH's third line the first 16 games of the season before the lineup changes Nov. 27 at RPI, when she was shifted to the second line. Lund has two points, both on assists. She tallied her first assist as a Wildcat – and ninth of her career – at Vermont (Oct. 30).
Vaattovaara recorded her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career with an 18-save effort at Vermont on Oct. 30; the Wildcats won 4-0. Vaattovaara has seven starts overall and her streak of six consecutive starts ended Nov. 8 at UConn; three of those six consecutive starts were against a Top 4 team (one at #2 BC, two at #4 Clarkson).
Vaattovaara is 1-5-0 with a 3.99 GAA and .865 save percentage; in three Hockey East games, she is 1-2-0 with a 3.44 GAA and .875 save percentage. She made 30 saves and allowed nine goals in the two-game series at fourth-ranked Clarkson on Oct. 23-24.
D-D-D, D-Fense
New Hampshire has a young defensive unit comprised of one senior (Sara Carlson, who entered the season with six games played on the blue line), three sophomores and two freshmen – the count was four sophomores at the start of the season, but Kate Haslett was transitioned to center at PC and UConn in early November.
Sophomore Amy Schlagel ranks third on the team in goals (five) and fourth in points (nine); she is also tied for third in shots (40). She recorded a point both games last weekend at RPI with a goal Friday and assist Saturday. Schlagel scored the game-winning goal Nov. 8 at UConn when she netted a power-play goal to break a 1-1 tie late in the second period (UNH won by that 2-1 margin). She recorded her first career multiple-point game with a goal and an assist Oct. 10 Syracuse as part of a three-game point streak. Overall, Schlagel has a point in 8 of 18 games.
Sophomore Julia Fedeski, who did not play in the Nov. 27-28 weekend series at Rensselaer, is tied for third on the team in assists (five); Fedeski also has two goals for a total of seven points. She matched her career high of two points with a goal and an assist against both Lindenwood (Oct. 9) and Boston U. (Nov. 1). Fedeski also tallied an assist at No. 4 Clarkson (Oct. 24) and at Providence College (Nov. 7).
Sophomore Kaylee Forster has skated in 15 of 18 games – she has dressed each of the last 15 after being a DNP the first three – and has tallied three points (1g, 2a). Forster recorded her first career point with a goal Oct. 30 at Vermont and tallied her first assist Nov. 8 at UConn. Her other assist was Nov. 21 vs. PC.
Freshman Marie-Jo Pelletier enters the weekend ranked second on the team with 37 blocked shots – and she stands in at 4-foot-11. She recorded her first career point with an assist Oct. 24 at fourth-ranked Clarkson and tallied another helper the next game at UVM (Oct. 30).
Freshman Jenna Rheault has also skated in all 18 games and also recorded her first career point with a goal in that Oct. 24 game at fourth-ranked Clarkson.
Facing Off
Amy Boucher leads New Hampshire in faceoffs won (194), taken (372) and win percentage (.522); she won 28 of 47 draws last weekend at RPI and that included a 13-for-20 effort in the 3-3 tie Nov. 27. In early November, she won 18 of 31 (58.0%) against Boston U. and 15 of 28 (53.6%) at Providence in consecutive games. She is at 50% or better in 12 of 18 games.
Nicoline Jensen is next in all three stats with 118 wins, 229 total and a .515 win percentage. She is .500 or better in 11 of 18 games, including six of the last eight games; she won 8 of 11 last Saturday at RPI and 9 of 11 one week earlier against Providence.
UNH has recorded the faceoff advantage in 7 of 18 games, including three of the last four.
Goaltending Carousel
UNH opened the season by starting four goaltenders in as many games. Freshman Hilary Cashin received the starting nod in the season opener vs. Maine (Oct. 2), followed by Vilma Vaattovaara against Lindenwood (Oct. 9), Kyra Smith vs. Syracuse (Oct. 10) and Ashley Wilkes at Merrimack (Oct. 17).
Since then, there has been more consistency in net. Vaattovaara started six consecutive games spanning Oct. 18 at Boston College to Nov. 7 at Providence College and Smith has started each of the past four games.
The Puck Stops Here
In addition to senior goaltender Vilma Vaattovaara, junior Ashley Wilkes returns in net for the Wildcats; freshmen Kyra Smith and Hilary Cashin give the 'Cats four netminders on the roster.
Smith has stepped into the role of #1 goalie. She has started each of the last eight games dating back to a 2-1 win at UConn on Nov. 8. Smith is 3-5-1 with a 2.87 GAA and team-best .886 save percentage in nine games (all starts). She was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 9 following a 21-save effort in the aforementioned win at UConn. Smith made her collegiate debut Oct. 10 at home against Syracuse – a 3-2 loss – and recorded half of her 12 saves in the first period.
Smith finished with a career-high 34 saves, including 16 in the second period, Nov. 13 at second-ranked Boston College. Two games later, she stopped 33 shots at ninth-ranked Harvard University (Nov. 18). Most recently, Smith made 15 saves in a 2-1 win at Rensselaer (Nov. 28).
Wilkes made her only appearance this season Oct. 17 at Merrimack College. She stopped 10 of 12 shots in a 2-1 loss to the Warriors at Lawler Rink. Those numbers calculate to a 2.03 GAA and .833 save percentage.
Cashin has played a total of 78:27 in two games this season, and she has a 0-1-0 record with a 3.82 GAA and .815 save percentage; Cashin has not seen action since Oct. 18. Cashin got the starting nod in the season opener Oct. 2 vs. Maine – she is the first freshman to start a season opener in goal since current senior Vaattovaara in the 2012-13 season. She shut out the Black Bears in the second period with 12 saves and she finished with 17 overall in the 4-0 loss; she surrendered three goals (Maine also netted an empty-net goal). Cashin came off the bench Oct. 18 at second-ranked Boston College to play the third period; she made five saves and allowed two goals.
No Longer New
In addition to the quartet of aforementioned sophomore defensemen, there are four sophomore forwards –and a defenseman who has transitioned to center – on this year's roster.
Amy Boucher enters the series against Merrimack College with 11 points on eight goals and three assists; she has been on a tear the past two weeks with two two-goal efforts and a two-assist performance to account for points on six of the Wildcats' nine goals.
Boucher has vaulted to the top of UNH's leaderboard in goals (eight) and second in points (11); she also leads the team in both power-play goals (four) and shooting percentage (.163), and is second in shots (49).
Boucher recorded her first career multiple-goal game with two tallies at Providence College on Nov. 7 and she tallied her first career multiple-assist game Nov. 27 at RPI.
Boucher is the top UNH center in the faceoff circle with 194 faceoffs won, 372 taken and a .522 win percentage; she won 28 of 47 draws last weekend at RPI and that included a 13-for-20 effort in the 3-3 tie Nov. 27.
Carlee Toews has two points this season with a goal and an assist. She scored her first career goal at UVM (Oct. 30) and tallied her other point with an assist vs. PC (Nov. 21). Toews has been the second line left wing each of the past two games; prior to that she was the left winger on the third line for 16 games.
Brooke Avery has skated in 8 of 18 games, six of them on the fourth line. She has not recorded a point and has been a DNP the past nine games.
Ali Praus has skated in 16 of 18 games, including each of the last 13; she did not dress the Oct. 17-18 weekend against Merrimack and BC.
Kate Haslett joined the group of forwards Nov. 7 at Providence by centering the fourth line, and she made an immediate impact by scoring her first goal of the season. She was elevated to center of the third line one day later at UConn.
Haslett has now skated nine games as a forward this season in comparison to eight as a defenseman (with one DNP Nov. 1 vs. Boston U.). Haslett also potted a goal Nov. 22 vs. Providence.
One For Me, One For You
Jonna Curtis also has an even split with 24 goals and 24 assists in 69 games. Cassandra Vilgrain is nearly an equal finisher and distributor with 16 goals and 17 assists in 84 games.
The New 'Cats In Town
The freshman class of Wildcats is comprised of forwards Caitlyn Radatovich, Devan Taylor and Taylor Wenczkowski (in addition to the aforementioned defensemen Marie-Jo Pelletier and Jenna Rheault and goalies Hilary Cashin and Kyra Smith.
Wenczkowski has five points, all on assists – she tallied her first point vs. Lindenwood (Oct. 9) and her most recent one vs. Providence (Nov. 21). She has skated in 17 of 18 games with a DNP Oct. 24 at Clarkson. She was the right wing on the top line the first six games of the season, then was moved to the second line when she returned Oct. 30 at UVM and has remained there since.
Taylor has three points with two goals and an assist – all three points were recorded when she was shifted to the top line from Oct. 24 to Nov. 24; she skated on the third line at RPI (Nov. 27-28). Taylor recorded her first career point with an assist at fourth-ranked Clarkson (Oct. 24) and scored her first career goal the next game at Vermont (Oct. 30). She also netted a goal Nov. 8 at PC.
Radatovich has skated in 15 of 18 games this season, including each of the last 10. She was a DNP consecutive games at BC (Oct. 18) and Clarkson (Oct. 23), as well as Oct. 30 at Vermont.

One regular-season game – Nov. 18 at Harvard – was broadcast on NESN Plus.
Scouting the Warriors
Merrimack College (Andover, Mass.) has a 2-14-0 record this season with a breakdown of 0-6-0 on the road and 2-7-0 at home as well as a 1-7-0 record in Hockey East; that includes a 0-3-0 mark in league road games and 1-4-0 in league home games.
As a first-year program, 16 of the 21 players on the roster are freshmen. Marie Delarbre, a transfer from Minnesota Duluth, and Samantha Saulnier have the most seniority as juniors.
MC opened the season with four straight losses against St. Cloud State and Robert Morris. The Warriors gained the first win in program history against UNH at home Oct. 17 (2-1). Their other win was 4-3 vs. Colgate on October 23. Since then, Merrimack has lost eight straight games. Most recently, the Warriors lost to Yale University (3-1) and UConn (4-1) at last weekend's Nutmeg Classic.
Paige Voight is the lone skater in double-digit points with 11 (five goals, six assists). Katelyn Rae (3g, 4a) and Paige Sorenson (2g, 5a) are next with seven points.
Samantha Ridgewell, who was in net for MC's win vs. UNH, has been the primary goaltender. In 10 games (nine starts), she is 2-7-0 with a 3.35 GAA and .903 save percentage.
Merrimack has scored more goals in the third period (16) than the first (six) and second (six) periods combined (12).
The Warriors are averaging 1.75 goals per game while surrendering 4.19 per game. On special teams, MC is slightly below the national median on the power play at 8-for-51 (15.7%), and the Warriors rank last – of 40 teams – in penalty kill at 32 of 49 (65.3%).
Familiar Faces On The Bench
Merrimack College head coach Erin (Whitten) Hamlen was a standout goaltender at UNH from 1989-93 and was both assistant coach and associate head coach with the program four 10 years (2000-10). During her coaching tenure, Hamlen helped guide the Wildcats to four straight Hockey East tournament titles, six straight regular season crowns, and two appearances in the Frozen Four. Hamlen was a four-time First-Team All-Star selection at UNH from 1989-93. She still ranks among the Wildcats' all-time leaders in victories, minutes played, and shutouts, and her career saves total (1,556) ranks fifth in program history. In 1990 and 1991, she helped lead UNH to a pair of ECAC Championship titles, and in 1992 she was selected ECAC Goaltender of the Year.
Assistant coach Kacey Bellamy also had a highly-decorated career at UNH and is a two-time Olympic silver medalist as a member of Team USA. Bellamy ranks third all-time in career points by a UNH defenseman; she earned RBK All-America First Team and Hockey East First Team honors as a senior. She was a UNH volunteer assistant coach in the 2011 season.

The Games
The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team welcomes Merrimack College to the Whittemore Center for the first time in program history when the teams face off Dec. 4 (7 p.m.) in Durham. UNH and Merrimack conclude the season series Dec. 5 (4 p.m.) at Lawler Rink.
The Matchup
Friday will be the second lifetime meeting between New Hampshire and Merrimack.
In the inaugural meeting between these programs Oct. 17, 2015 at Lawler Rink, UNH recorded a 35-12 shot advantage but Merrimack won 2-1. Paige Voight gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead with 73 seconds left in the first period and Jackie Pieper extended the advantage to 2-0 with a shorthanded tally 96 seconds into the third period. Jonna Curtis finished a feed from Taylor Wenczkowski to lift the Wildcats within 2-1 at 12:02.
The Wildcats pulled goaltender Ashley Wilkes in favor of an extra skater with 47 seconds left in regulation and called time out with 26.6 seconds on the clock. UNH's Amy Boucher won the ensuing faceoff and a shot from the point by Sara Carlson was stopped by MC goaltender Samantha Ridgewell. Boucher won another faceoff and this time Amy Schlagel blasted a shot that was blocked by a Warrior skater. With eight seconds to play, Boucher won yet another faceoff and Curtis sent a shot wide. Time expired before the 'Cats could get another shot on goal.
Wilkes made half of her 10 saves in the third period, while Ridgewell stopped 34 shots overall, including 15 in the first period.
UNH went 0-for-2 on the power play. Merrimack was 0-for-1.
The State of New Hampshire
UNH has a 4-13-1 overall record with a 3-8-0 mark in Hockey East, 1-6-0 at home and 3-7-1 on the road; the Wildcats are 1-4-0 in league home games and 2-4-0 in league road games.
Last weekend, the Wildcats traveled to Troy, N.Y. for a two-game series against Rensselaer and returned home with a 3-3 tie and 2-1 victory. The two-game unbeaten streak is the team's longest of the season.
Six losses have been to nationally-ranked teams, including five opponents ranked in the top 4 in the country (three vs. #2 Boston College; two vs. #4 Clarkson).
New Hampshire went 3-6-1 in November with three losses to nationally-ranked teams.
In six games spanning Oct. 23 to Nov. 8, UNH's offense scored 19 goals – between 2-4 goals every game – for an average of 3.16 per game.
Overall, the 'Cats are averaging 1.89 goals per game while allowing 3.50 gpg. The opposition has scored 5+ goals five times (none in the past six games), whereas UNH has a season-high four goals three times (but lost two of those games).
The Wildcats have been outscored 63-34 with a breakdown of 17-12 in the first, 21-13 in the second and 25-9 in the third.
UNH is minus-29 in scoring but plus-28 in shots at 499-471; the 'Cats are +23 (159-136) in the third period.
'Cat Nips
Sophomore forward Amy Boucher recorded a pair of multiple-point games last weekend at Rensselaer to finish with four points (2g, 2a). Boucher recorded her first career multiple-assist game with two assists in Friday's 3-3 tie; she also had a +2 rating and won 13 of 20 faceoffs. One day later, she matched her career high of two points for the second time in as many days by equaling her personal best of two goals.
Freshman goaltender Kyra Smith stopped 38 of 42 shots in the two-game series at Rensselaer for a 1.92 GAA and .905 save percentage. She recorded 15 the 2-1 win and made 23 stops in the 3-3 tie. Smith backboned the penalty kill to a perfect 5-for-5 effort in the two games.
Smith has started eight consecutive games spanning back to the Nov. 8 game at UConn.
Senior forward Haley Breedlove had her first career multiple-assist effort by setting up both goals in Saturday's 2-1 win. The two points matched her personal best.
Senior defenseman and captain Sara Carlson tallied two assists last Friday to match her career highs in both assists and points.
Junior forward Jonna Curtis recorded her fifth multiple point of the season Friday with a goal and an assist.
Junior forward and alternate captain Cassandra Vilgrain recorded a point in both games with a goal Friday and assist Saturday.
Sophomore defenseman Amy Schlagel also tallied a point in both games vs. RPI with a goal Friday and assist Saturday.
Working Overtime
New Hampshire played its only overtime game of the season last Friday at Rensselaer and skated to a 3-3 tie against the Engineers. UNH is unbeaten in its last five overtime games with a 1-0-4 record. the Wildcats were 1-0-3 in OT last season.
On a Hot Streak
Amy Boucher has recorded two points three of the last four games and has a point in 6 of 10 with a total of four multiple-point efforts in that span. She tallied her first career multiple-goal game Nov. 7 at Providence College and matched that Nov. 21 at home vs. PC as well as Nov. 28 at Rensselaer.
Boucher has climbed to the top of the team leaderboard in goals (eight) and is second in points (11). She also leads the team in both power-play goals (four) and shooting percentage (.163), and ranks second in shots (49).
The Last 5
UNH has a 2-2-1 record the past five games with a 1-1-0 mark at home and 1-1-1 on the road. The Wildcats are averaging 1.80 goals per game and are allowing 2.80 gpg. The power play has been impressive at 35.7% (5 of 14), while the penalty kill is at 80.0% (12 of 15).
Amy Boucher is the top point producer with six (4g, 2a) the last five games. Sara Carlson is next with four (4a). Kyra Smith is 2-2-1 with a 2.57 GAA and .896 save percentage.
November Numbers
New Hampshire went 3-6-1 in November but closed the month with a two-game unbeaten streak (1-0-1). Amy Boucher averaged one point per game with seven goals and three assists for 10 points in 10 games. Jonna Curtis was the next top point producer with nine (2g, 7a). In goal, Kyra Smith started the last eight games of the month and had a 3-4-1 record with a 2.85 GAA and .893 save percentage.
Conference Call
In 11 Hockey East league games, Jonna Curtis has tallied two goals and seven assists for nine points. Amy Boucher is next with six points on five goals and an assist. Three skaters – Julia Fedeski and Sara Carlson – are tied for third with four points.
In goal, Kyra Smith is 2-3-0 with a 3.01 GAA and .889 save percentage. Ashley Wilkes is 0-1-0 with a 2.03 GAA and .833 save percentage. Vilma Vaattovaara has a 1-3-0 record in four games with a 3.88 GAA and .872 save percentage. Hilary Cashin is 0-1-0 with a 3.82 GAA and .815 save percentage in two games.
That Was Close
Five of UNH's 16 games have been decided by one goal and the Wildcats have a 2-3 record in those contests. Most recently, UNH closed the month of November with a 2-1 road win against Rensselaer.
New Hampshire opened November with back-to-back one-goal games with a 5-4 loss at Providence and 2-1 win at UConn. Earlier in the season, UNH lost consecutive one-goal games to Syracuse (3-2 on Oct. 10) and at Merrimack College (2-1 on Oct. 17).
Special Teams
New Hampshire's power play has produced a goal three of the last four games; the Wildcats netted a PPG both games last weekend at Rensselaer (2-for-5 overall) and was a perfect 3-for-3 in the 3-2 win vs. Providence College on Nov. 21.
UNH's penalty kill was perfect last weekend in five shorthanded situations against the Engineers. Prior to that, the opponents' power play scored in five consecutive games at 7-for-17 (41.2%). The 'Cats have allowed a power-play goal in 12 of 18 games.
Overall, UNH is 10-for-56 (17.9%) on the power play and 42 of 56 (75.0%) on the penalty kill.
First Strike
UNH has scored the game's first goal eight times, including three consecutive games Nov. 1-8 against Boston University, Providence College and UConn. The Wildcats have a 4-4-0 record when taking a 1-0 lead.
Two-Goal Lead
UNH held two-goal leads three consecutive games at Vermont (Oct. 30), vs. Boston U. (Nov. 1) and at Providence (Nov. 7), but the Wildcats won just one of those games. New Hampshire upended UVM, 4-0. The 'Cats held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 against BU but lost 5-3. UNH also had a pair of two-goal leads (2-0 and 4-2) at PC but lost 5-4.
The Wildcats built a 3-0 lead against those Friars on Nov. 21 and fended them off for a 3-2 win at the Whitt.
Most recently, UNH took a 3-1 lead into the third period Nov. 27 at Rensselaer, but the Engineers struck twice in the third period and the teams skated to a 3-3 tie.
What Just Happened
UNH went 1-0-1 last weekend with a 3-3 tie and 2-1 victory at Rensselaer. Last Friday, UNH scored three consecutive goals to build a 3-1 lead, but the Engineers netted a pair of third-period goals to rally for the tie.
One day later, the Wildcats struck late in the first period and took that 1-0 lead into the final frame; RPI tied the score at 6:37, but the 'Cats regained the lead at 11:41 fended off the Engineers.
What's Next
New Hampshire returns to action early next week with a Dec. 8 (7 p.m.) home game against intrastate rival Dartmouth College. UNH then travels to fourth-ranked Quinnipiac University (Dec. 11; 7 p.m.) and plays host to Yale University (Dec. 13; 2 p.m.) before breaking for exams and the holidays.
'Cat Captain
Senior defenseman Sara Carlson reprises her role as team captain in the 2015-16 season. Last year, Carlson made her debut as a defenseman for a three-game stretch in late October, then ended the year on the blue line all three games of the Hockey East quarterfinal – that's a total of six games.
Carlson opened the 2015-16 season on the blue line paired with sophomore defenseman Amy Schlagel and has been there all 18 games. Carlson ranks second on the team in assists (eight) and is third in points (10). She is atop the team leaderboard in blocked shots (38).
Carlson has matched her career high of two assists – and two points – in two of the last four games, most recently Nov. 27 at Rensselaer. She also tallied two assists Nov. 21 vs. Providence and Oct. 10 against Syracuse.
She recorded a point three consecutive games with a goal (Oct. 23) and assist (Oct. 24) at Clarkson followed by a goal at UVM.
In 122 career games, Carlson has compiled 13 goals and 33 assists for 46 points.
The Alternates
Senior forward Heather Kashman and junior forward Cassandra Vilgrain are designated as team leaders by their distinction as alternate captains. Kashman was also an alternate captain last year.
Vilgrain has recorded five points (2g, 3a) in 18 games this season; she was a winger on the second line the initial 16 games before shifting to the top line with Jonna Curtis and Amy Boucher for the November series at RPI.
The move paid immediate dividends for Vilgrain, who recorded a point both games against the Engineers with a goal Friday and an assist Saturday. It marked the first time this season she recorded a point in consecutive games.
She recorded her first points of the season by matching her career high of two assists at Vermont on Oct. 30. She broke into the scoring column with a goal Nov. 8 at UConn.
Kashman has been sidelined by injury the entire 2015-16 season.
Top Of The List
Junior forward Jonna Curtis leads the team in assists (10), points (17) and shots (75), and she ranks second in goals with seven. She recorded her fifth multiple-point game of the season with a goal and an assist Nov. 27 at RPI, and she has tallied a point in 10 of 18 games overall.
Curtis recorded a six-game point streak and five-game assist streak from Oct. 23 to Nov. 8; she tallied four goals and seven assists for 11 points during the streak.
Curtis matched her personal best of two assists for the second consecutive game Nov. 7 at Providence College. She tallied a goal and two assists the previous game vs. Boston University (Nov. 1).
Curtis tallied two goals and an assist Oct. 24 at Clarkson; the two goals match her personal best.
Senior Class
The senior class includes the aforementioned captain, Sara Carlson, and alternate captain Heather Kashman as well as forwards Haley Breedlove, Nicoline Jensen and Margo Lund, and goaltender Vilma Vaattovaara.
Breedlove enters the weekend with four points, all on assists. She recorded her first career multiple-assist game with two at Rensselaer on Nov. 28, and the two points matched her personal best. Breedlove tallied a single assist against both Syracuse (Oct. 10) and Vermont (Oct. 30).
Jensen centered the top line the first three games this season and has centered the second line the past 15 games. Jensen has three points with a goal and two assists. She has been one of the top centers in the faceoff circle at 118 of 229 (.515 win percentage) – all three of those numbers rank second on the team. Jensen won 20 of 29 draws in a two-game series against Providence on Nov. 21-22, and that included 9 of 11 in the latter game.
Lund skated as the right wing on UNH's third line the first 16 games of the season before the lineup changes Nov. 27 at RPI, when she was shifted to the second line. Lund has two points, both on assists. She tallied her first assist as a Wildcat – and ninth of her career – at Vermont (Oct. 30).
Vaattovaara recorded her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career with an 18-save effort at Vermont on Oct. 30; the Wildcats won 4-0. Vaattovaara has seven starts overall and her streak of six consecutive starts ended Nov. 8 at UConn; three of those six consecutive starts were against a Top 4 team (one at #2 BC, two at #4 Clarkson).
Vaattovaara is 1-5-0 with a 3.99 GAA and .865 save percentage; in three Hockey East games, she is 1-2-0 with a 3.44 GAA and .875 save percentage. She made 30 saves and allowed nine goals in the two-game series at fourth-ranked Clarkson on Oct. 23-24.
D-D-D, D-Fense
New Hampshire has a young defensive unit comprised of one senior (Sara Carlson, who entered the season with six games played on the blue line), three sophomores and two freshmen – the count was four sophomores at the start of the season, but Kate Haslett was transitioned to center at PC and UConn in early November.
Sophomore Amy Schlagel ranks third on the team in goals (five) and fourth in points (nine); she is also tied for third in shots (40). She recorded a point both games last weekend at RPI with a goal Friday and assist Saturday. Schlagel scored the game-winning goal Nov. 8 at UConn when she netted a power-play goal to break a 1-1 tie late in the second period (UNH won by that 2-1 margin). She recorded her first career multiple-point game with a goal and an assist Oct. 10 Syracuse as part of a three-game point streak. Overall, Schlagel has a point in 8 of 18 games.
Sophomore Julia Fedeski, who did not play in the Nov. 27-28 weekend series at Rensselaer, is tied for third on the team in assists (five); Fedeski also has two goals for a total of seven points. She matched her career high of two points with a goal and an assist against both Lindenwood (Oct. 9) and Boston U. (Nov. 1). Fedeski also tallied an assist at No. 4 Clarkson (Oct. 24) and at Providence College (Nov. 7).
Sophomore Kaylee Forster has skated in 15 of 18 games – she has dressed each of the last 15 after being a DNP the first three – and has tallied three points (1g, 2a). Forster recorded her first career point with a goal Oct. 30 at Vermont and tallied her first assist Nov. 8 at UConn. Her other assist was Nov. 21 vs. PC.
Freshman Marie-Jo Pelletier enters the weekend ranked second on the team with 37 blocked shots – and she stands in at 4-foot-11. She recorded her first career point with an assist Oct. 24 at fourth-ranked Clarkson and tallied another helper the next game at UVM (Oct. 30).
Freshman Jenna Rheault has also skated in all 18 games and also recorded her first career point with a goal in that Oct. 24 game at fourth-ranked Clarkson.
Facing Off
Amy Boucher leads New Hampshire in faceoffs won (194), taken (372) and win percentage (.522); she won 28 of 47 draws last weekend at RPI and that included a 13-for-20 effort in the 3-3 tie Nov. 27. In early November, she won 18 of 31 (58.0%) against Boston U. and 15 of 28 (53.6%) at Providence in consecutive games. She is at 50% or better in 12 of 18 games.
Nicoline Jensen is next in all three stats with 118 wins, 229 total and a .515 win percentage. She is .500 or better in 11 of 18 games, including six of the last eight games; she won 8 of 11 last Saturday at RPI and 9 of 11 one week earlier against Providence.
UNH has recorded the faceoff advantage in 7 of 18 games, including three of the last four.
Goaltending Carousel
UNH opened the season by starting four goaltenders in as many games. Freshman Hilary Cashin received the starting nod in the season opener vs. Maine (Oct. 2), followed by Vilma Vaattovaara against Lindenwood (Oct. 9), Kyra Smith vs. Syracuse (Oct. 10) and Ashley Wilkes at Merrimack (Oct. 17).
Since then, there has been more consistency in net. Vaattovaara started six consecutive games spanning Oct. 18 at Boston College to Nov. 7 at Providence College and Smith has started each of the past four games.
The Puck Stops Here
In addition to senior goaltender Vilma Vaattovaara, junior Ashley Wilkes returns in net for the Wildcats; freshmen Kyra Smith and Hilary Cashin give the 'Cats four netminders on the roster.
Smith has stepped into the role of #1 goalie. She has started each of the last eight games dating back to a 2-1 win at UConn on Nov. 8. Smith is 3-5-1 with a 2.87 GAA and team-best .886 save percentage in nine games (all starts). She was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 9 following a 21-save effort in the aforementioned win at UConn. Smith made her collegiate debut Oct. 10 at home against Syracuse – a 3-2 loss – and recorded half of her 12 saves in the first period.
Smith finished with a career-high 34 saves, including 16 in the second period, Nov. 13 at second-ranked Boston College. Two games later, she stopped 33 shots at ninth-ranked Harvard University (Nov. 18). Most recently, Smith made 15 saves in a 2-1 win at Rensselaer (Nov. 28).
Wilkes made her only appearance this season Oct. 17 at Merrimack College. She stopped 10 of 12 shots in a 2-1 loss to the Warriors at Lawler Rink. Those numbers calculate to a 2.03 GAA and .833 save percentage.
Cashin has played a total of 78:27 in two games this season, and she has a 0-1-0 record with a 3.82 GAA and .815 save percentage; Cashin has not seen action since Oct. 18. Cashin got the starting nod in the season opener Oct. 2 vs. Maine – she is the first freshman to start a season opener in goal since current senior Vaattovaara in the 2012-13 season. She shut out the Black Bears in the second period with 12 saves and she finished with 17 overall in the 4-0 loss; she surrendered three goals (Maine also netted an empty-net goal). Cashin came off the bench Oct. 18 at second-ranked Boston College to play the third period; she made five saves and allowed two goals.
No Longer New
In addition to the quartet of aforementioned sophomore defensemen, there are four sophomore forwards –and a defenseman who has transitioned to center – on this year's roster.
Amy Boucher enters the series against Merrimack College with 11 points on eight goals and three assists; she has been on a tear the past two weeks with two two-goal efforts and a two-assist performance to account for points on six of the Wildcats' nine goals.
Boucher has vaulted to the top of UNH's leaderboard in goals (eight) and second in points (11); she also leads the team in both power-play goals (four) and shooting percentage (.163), and is second in shots (49).

Carlee Toews has two points this season with a goal and an assist. She scored her first career goal at UVM (Oct. 30) and tallied her other point with an assist vs. PC (Nov. 21). Toews has been the second line left wing each of the past two games; prior to that she was the left winger on the third line for 16 games.
Brooke Avery has skated in 8 of 18 games, six of them on the fourth line. She has not recorded a point and has been a DNP the past nine games.
Ali Praus has skated in 16 of 18 games, including each of the last 13; she did not dress the Oct. 17-18 weekend against Merrimack and BC.
Kate Haslett joined the group of forwards Nov. 7 at Providence by centering the fourth line, and she made an immediate impact by scoring her first goal of the season. She was elevated to center of the third line one day later at UConn.
Haslett has now skated nine games as a forward this season in comparison to eight as a defenseman (with one DNP Nov. 1 vs. Boston U.). Haslett also potted a goal Nov. 22 vs. Providence.
One For Me, One For You
Jonna Curtis also has an even split with 24 goals and 24 assists in 69 games. Cassandra Vilgrain is nearly an equal finisher and distributor with 16 goals and 17 assists in 84 games.
The New 'Cats In Town
The freshman class of Wildcats is comprised of forwards Caitlyn Radatovich, Devan Taylor and Taylor Wenczkowski (in addition to the aforementioned defensemen Marie-Jo Pelletier and Jenna Rheault and goalies Hilary Cashin and Kyra Smith.
Wenczkowski has five points, all on assists – she tallied her first point vs. Lindenwood (Oct. 9) and her most recent one vs. Providence (Nov. 21). She has skated in 17 of 18 games with a DNP Oct. 24 at Clarkson. She was the right wing on the top line the first six games of the season, then was moved to the second line when she returned Oct. 30 at UVM and has remained there since.
Taylor has three points with two goals and an assist – all three points were recorded when she was shifted to the top line from Oct. 24 to Nov. 24; she skated on the third line at RPI (Nov. 27-28). Taylor recorded her first career point with an assist at fourth-ranked Clarkson (Oct. 24) and scored her first career goal the next game at Vermont (Oct. 30). She also netted a goal Nov. 8 at PC.
Radatovich has skated in 15 of 18 games this season, including each of the last 10. She was a DNP consecutive games at BC (Oct. 18) and Clarkson (Oct. 23), as well as Oct. 30 at Vermont.

Scouting the Warriors
Merrimack College (Andover, Mass.) has a 2-14-0 record this season with a breakdown of 0-6-0 on the road and 2-7-0 at home as well as a 1-7-0 record in Hockey East; that includes a 0-3-0 mark in league road games and 1-4-0 in league home games.
As a first-year program, 16 of the 21 players on the roster are freshmen. Marie Delarbre, a transfer from Minnesota Duluth, and Samantha Saulnier have the most seniority as juniors.
MC opened the season with four straight losses against St. Cloud State and Robert Morris. The Warriors gained the first win in program history against UNH at home Oct. 17 (2-1). Their other win was 4-3 vs. Colgate on October 23. Since then, Merrimack has lost eight straight games. Most recently, the Warriors lost to Yale University (3-1) and UConn (4-1) at last weekend's Nutmeg Classic.
Paige Voight is the lone skater in double-digit points with 11 (five goals, six assists). Katelyn Rae (3g, 4a) and Paige Sorenson (2g, 5a) are next with seven points.
Samantha Ridgewell, who was in net for MC's win vs. UNH, has been the primary goaltender. In 10 games (nine starts), she is 2-7-0 with a 3.35 GAA and .903 save percentage.
Merrimack has scored more goals in the third period (16) than the first (six) and second (six) periods combined (12).
The Warriors are averaging 1.75 goals per game while surrendering 4.19 per game. On special teams, MC is slightly below the national median on the power play at 8-for-51 (15.7%), and the Warriors rank last – of 40 teams – in penalty kill at 32 of 49 (65.3%).
Familiar Faces On The Bench
Merrimack College head coach Erin (Whitten) Hamlen was a standout goaltender at UNH from 1989-93 and was both assistant coach and associate head coach with the program four 10 years (2000-10). During her coaching tenure, Hamlen helped guide the Wildcats to four straight Hockey East tournament titles, six straight regular season crowns, and two appearances in the Frozen Four. Hamlen was a four-time First-Team All-Star selection at UNH from 1989-93. She still ranks among the Wildcats' all-time leaders in victories, minutes played, and shutouts, and her career saves total (1,556) ranks fifth in program history. In 1990 and 1991, she helped lead UNH to a pair of ECAC Championship titles, and in 1992 she was selected ECAC Goaltender of the Year.
Assistant coach Kacey Bellamy also had a highly-decorated career at UNH and is a two-time Olympic silver medalist as a member of Team USA. Bellamy ranks third all-time in career points by a UNH defenseman; she earned RBK All-America First Team and Hockey East First Team honors as a senior. She was a UNH volunteer assistant coach in the 2011 season.
