CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Vilma Vaattovaara (Veikkola, Finland) recorded a season-high 19 saves but the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team was defeated 6-0 Sunday afternoon by second-ranked Boston College at Conte Forum.
UNH is now 0-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in Hockey East. BC extended its season-opening win streak to six games with two victories in Hockey East. The Eagles scored two goals each period and recorded a 30-26 shot advantage. UNH outshot the hosts 14-9 in the second period.
Vaattovaara stopped 19 of 23 shots in 40 minutes with a 12-save effort in the second stanza. Hilary Cashin (Fredericton, New Brunswick) played the third period in net for the Wildcats and was credited with five saves.
Krystin Capizzano and Kenzie Kent scored two goals apiece while both Alex Carpenter and Haley Skarupa were credited with three assists. Katie Burt stopped all 26 shots, including 12 on UNH's five power plays, for the shutout.
New Hampshire returns to action Nov. 24-25 for a two-game series at Clarkson University; both games start at 3 p.m. The Wildcats' next home game is Nov. 1 (2 p.m.) against Boston University. Tickets for that game at the Whittemore Center and all other women's ice hockey home games are available by calling 603-862-4000, ext. 5 or visiting www.unhwildcats.com.
Vaattovaara was tested early but she stopped Dana Trivigno's one-timer at the left doorstep. BC went on the first power play of the game at 2:20 and Kent scored 23 seconds later when her low shot deep on the right side found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
UNH generated its first scoring chance at 4:30, when Jonna Curtis (Elk River, Minn.) led a rush down the right wing and wristed a shot into Burt. One minute later at the other end of the ice, Vaattovaara made a big save when she stopped Makenna Newkirk's tip at the top of the crease.
Capizzano, with the assistance of Toni Ann Milano and Karupa, increased the lead to 2-0 at 7:27.
In the 14th minute, Amy Boucher (Edmonton, Alberta) carried the puck into the right circle and from the faceoff dot she snapped a hard wrister, but Burt made the glove save. UNH went on its first power play at 15:30. With 30 seconds remaining on the skater advantage, Boucher's shot from the top of the right circle sailed through traffic was blocked aside by Burt.
Just as BC returned to full strength, Skarupa advanced down the slot and wristed a low, hard shot that Vaattovaara kicked away with her left leg pad.
The Eagles were on the power play with just over a minute remaining in the first period when Vaattovaara stacked her pads to deny Trivigno from point-blank range. With the teams skating 4-on-4 in the closing seconds, Carpenter skated through the right circle and, just when it looked like she would circle behind the net, she cut toward the post but was stoned by Vaattovaara.
Boston College led 2-0 with a 14-8 shot advantage at the first intermission.
The 'Cats went on an abbreviated power play of 68 seconds just three seconds into the second period, but did not record a shot. BC's Kali Flanigan ripped a shot from the slot that ricocheted off the crossbar at 4:30.
Anastos gave BC a 3-0 lead at 6:34 when she rifled a shot from the slot inside the right post. Skarupa and Kaliya Johnson set up the tally.
Vaattovaara did well to keep the margin at three goals in the ninth minute, when Megan Keller corralled a loose puck in the low slot and quickly shoveled a shot on goal.
New Hampshire generated pressure at 9:20 when Nicoline Jensen (Rodovre, Denmark) carried the puck down the right win and her centering pass was one-timed on goal by Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alberta). UNH kept the puck in the offensive zone and a hard shot off the stick of Kaylee Forster (Zimmerman, Minn.) deflected off Devan Taylor (North Billerica, Mass.) toward the cage, but Burt blocked the puck away.
One minute later, UNH created another scoring opportunity when Amy Schlagel (Blaine, Minn.) led a rush down the left wing and blasted a slap shot from the top of the circle that Burt stopped.
Moments later, Jensen snuck behind the defense for a breakaway down the slot, but Johnson raced back to lift the stick and poke the puck away to deny a scoring chance. With three minutes left in the second period, Curtis stole the puck just outside the blue line of the attacking zone and wristed a shot from the right faceoff dot that Burt snared.
UNH generated another dangerous bid in the closing minutes of the frame. From behind the net, Boucher threw the puck in front to Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, N.H.) and her attempt to stuff the puck inside the right post was denied by Burt. The 'Cats sustained possession but the BC netminder also turned aside Boucher in the low slot.
The Eagles transitioned to the other end of the ice and Capizzano potted her second goal of the game to extend the advantage to 4-0 at 18:50.
BC netted goals 74 seconds apart early in the third period. Meghan Grieves snapped a shot from the slot inside the left post at 3:41 and Kent struck again at 4:55 to close the scoring.
