Men’s Soccer Edged by Binghamton, 2-1

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team fell by a score of 2-1 to Binghamton University Wednesday night at Cowell Stadium. Junior co-captain Chris Wingate (Hovik, Norway) scored New Hampshire's goal in the 60th minute.
The loss drops UNH to 8-2-2 on the year and to 2-1-0 in America East Conference play while the Bearcats improve to 7-5-1 overall and to 2-1-0 in conference action.
Senior midfielder A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.) nearly got the Wildcats on the board in the 23rd minute of play as he ripped a volley shot from inside the six yard box, but Binghamton keeper Robert Moewes made the save.
The Wildcats kept the tempo up in the in the 28th minute of play when Wingate played a pass into the mixer from outside of the 18-yard box nearly in stride with senior Connor Pauley (Londonderry, N.H.), however Connor could not connect with the pass despite diving for it.
The Bearcats threatened late in the first half with a direct kick from 25 yards out. Pascal Trappe fired a shot on net, but senior keeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) made the save to keep Binghamton off the board.
At the end of the first half, the game remained scoreless. UNH held a 4-2 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
In the seventh minute of the second half, freshman Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) received a pass up field from junior Duff Thomson (Newton, N.H.) and then beat a defender. He blazed down the right side and fired a shot with his left foot, but the bid went inches wide of the net.
The Bearcats struck first to make it 1-0 in the 55th minute of play on a header goal by Zach Galluzzo. Harrison Weilbacher fired a corner kick in from the right side of the pitch that Galluzzo connected with at the six yard mark.
The Wildcats answered in the 60th minute on a beautiful one-time volley by Wingate. Junior Riley Ellis (Goffstown, N.H.) played a long pass from midfield to the laces of Wingate in the box. He connected with the ball to beat Moewes and tie the game.
Binghamton's Logan Roberts logged the second goal of the game for the Bearcats in the 70th minute of play which would end up being the eventual game winner. Harrison Weilbacher fired the initial shot from the top of the box that ricocheted off Roberts en route to the net. The ball was headed to the right side of the net and ended up in the left.
Wingate nearly tied the game in the 72nd minute as he played a header shot off a cross into the box, but his attempt was just wide of the net. Ellis sparked some offense late in the match with under two minutes remaining as he ripped a pair of shots, but his shots were shy of the goal. At the end of the match, the Bearcats held on for a 2-1 win.
Carpenter made three saves on five shots faced in the match. His record falls to 7-2-2. Moewes made the same amount as he got the win and improved to 7-5-1. The Wildcats held the advantage in the shot column, 12-7.
UNH returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 17 as they travel to the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
