DURHAM, N.H. -- Freshman center Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted 17 points and a career-high 17 rebounds for her third double-double of the season as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team notched a 73-68 win over Binghamton University at Lundholm Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
New Hampshire records its third consecutive America East win and improves to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in league play. Binghamton slips to 4-14, 2-3.
Pogue's 17 boards is the most by a Wildcat since Denise Beliveau ripped down 17 in a 69-63 overtime win at the University of Vermont on Jan. 14, 2012. The rookie tallied nine of UNH's 18 offensive rebounds.
Junior guard Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) was one rebound shy of a double-double, tallying 16 points and nine boards. Sophomore guard Kristen Anderson (Greene, Maine) eclipsed double figures in scoring with 13 points while matching a personal best eight assists. Senior guard/forward Sarah-Marie Frankenberger (Gross Gerau, Germany) turned in nine points, including an unblemished 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line. Belanger shot 6 of 13 from the field and 4 of 5 from the free throw line. Nine of Anderson's 13 points came by the 3-pointer as she connected on 3 of 5 attempts from beyond the arc.
Binghamton registered two players with 20-plus scoring efforts. Senior forward Sherae Swinson dropped a game-high 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the floor. Jasmine Sina posted 20 points as the freshman guard drilled 5 of 16 attempts from the floor, including 4 of 10 from 3-point range. Additionally, Sina boasted a 6-for-6 effort from the charity stripe.
The Wildcats converted 26 of 63 (36.4 percent) shots from the field while the Bearcats registered 22 of 53 (41.5 percent) from the floor. New Hampshire dialed up from beyond the arc 10 times while draining four, compiling a .400 3-point percentage. Binghamton attempted 16 3-pointers while drilling five for a .313 clip.
Both teams featured high free throw percentages. UNH missed just one free throw in the game on 17 of 18 (94.4 percent) attempts from the charity stripe while Binghamton sunk 19 of 21 (90.5 percent) from the line.
New Hampshire prevailed in the paint, outrebounding (45-25) and outscoring (36-28) Binghamton.
The two squads battled with a lot of back-and-forth action to start the game as UNH held a 12-10 advantage. The Bearcats would capture the lead on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Imani Watkins at the 12:40 mark. However, UNH engineered a 16-4 run to jolt ahead 28-17, elapsing over 6 minutes, 40 seconds. The surge was sparked by a six-point scoring flurry from Pogue.
Binghamton snapped the UNH scoring run with a 3-ball at the 4:40 mark to bring the visiting team within single digits at 28-20.
New Hampshire momentarily reconstructed its double figure lead with layups from senior forward Kaylee Kilpatrick (Saint John, New Brunswick) and Belanger. Despite that, the Bearcats closed out the half with five of the last seven points of the opening frame as the Wildcats entered halftime with a 34-27 lead.
Swinson looked to swiftly even the score for the Bearcats as she poured in eight of the first 12 points to begin the second frame as the Wildcats lead narrowed to 38-35. Despite back-to-back layups from senior guard Ariel Gaston (Toledo, Ohio) and Pogue, Binghamton inched within two points at 42-40 with 15:19 left in regulation.
UNH maintained its slim edge as the score rose to 51-49 midway through the frame. The home team managed to pull away with a 10-2 surge, capped of by an Anderson 3-ball with 6:09 on the clock.
New Hampshire maintained its double-digit lead with 4:24 remaining in regulation, as the home team owned a 63-53 advantage. The Bearcats would not fade away quietly as the visiting team mustered a 12-1 run to tie the game at the 64 apiece with 2:13 showing on the board. With under a minute remaining, Frankenberger broke the deadlock to give the Wildcats the 67-64 edge. Following a defense stop by New Hampshire, Belanger poured in two free throws and up the home team score to 69-64 with 35 ticks left.
Binghamton managed to make it a one-score game again as Sina drained both of her attempts from the charity stripe as the score stood, 69-66. However, UNH countered with perfect trips to the charity stripe for Anderson and Belanger. The four free throws were enough to put the game out reach for Binghamton and propel the home team to the 73-68 win.
The Wildcats remain in Durham as the University of Massachusetts Lowell comes to Lundholm Gymnasium on Monday, Jan. 19 for a basketball doubleheader. Tip-off for the women's game is set for 1 p.m. while the men will start at 3:30 p.m. Both games will be televised nationally on Fox College Sports and streamed on AmericaEast.tv.
