Belanger, Pogue Post Double-Doubles as Women's Basketball Wins Fourth Straight Against UMass Lowell, 58-51

DURHAM, N.H. -- Elizabeth Belanger (Acton, Mass.) and Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) each turned in a double-double performance of 18 points and 12 rebounds as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team topped the University of Massachusetts Lowell, 58-51, Monday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium.
New Hampshire tallies its fourth consecutive win and improves to 13-5 overall and 5-1 in America East play. UMass Lowell drops to 7-11, 1-5 in the conference setback.
Pogue shot 8 of 18 from the floor while racking up a career-high five blocks. Belanger drilled 6 of 20 attempts from the field and drained 5 of 6 free throws. Senior guard/forward Sarah-Marie Frankenberger (Gross Gerau, Germany) chipped in six points and a career-high seven rebounds off the bench. Additionally, Frankenberger logged another unblemished performance from the free throw line, draining all four of her attempts.
Guards Jasmine McRoy and Brianna Rudolph paced UMass Lowell in the scoring column with 10 points apiece. McRoy converted 4 of 6 shots from the field, including a 2-for-2 performance from beyond the arc. Rudolph poured in 4 of 13 attempts from the floor. Lindsey Doucette led the River Hawks on the glass, ripping down eight rebounds.
The Wildcats drilled 22 of 61 (36.1 percent) shots from the field while the River Hawks registered 20 of 62 (32.3 percent) attempts from the floor. New Hampshire made 13 of 19 free throws (68.4 percent) while UMass Lowell was just 5 of 10 (50.0 percent) from the charity stripe.
New Hampshire controlled the paint, outrebounding (50-38) and outscoring (38-24) the opposition. The game featured six tie scores and seven lead changes.
McRoy opened the scoring for the River Hawks as she drilled a 3-pointer. Despite field goals from Kaylee Kilpatrick (Saint John, New Brunswick), Belanger and Pogue, UMass Lowell bolted out to an early 15-8 lead with 13:42 left in the first half.
UNH swiftly erased the eight-point deficit, engineering a 9-2 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Belanger to knot the score at 17-17. After each side traded field goals, Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) drained a jumper from the left side to give the 'Cats their lead of the game at 21-19 with 8:38 remaining in the first half. However, the River Hawks quickly recaptured the advantage as Melissa Frase sunk a 3-ball on the next possession.
The Wildcats evened the score again at 27-27 and 29-29, getting contributions from Stephanie Spoto (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Belanger in the expiring moments of the first half. Belanger recorded a free throw to give the 'Cats the lead with 20 seconds left on the clock. Despite that, Asia Mitchell Owens registered a 3-pointer from the top of the arc as UML entered the locker room with a 32-30 lead.
New Hampshire turned to Belanger and Pogue for scoring to begin the second half as the tandem managed to tie the score at the 34 and 36 marks. Peyton Booth (Wadsworth, Ohio) added a layup to lift the Wildcats to a 36-34 edge with 16:01 to go in the second half.
UMass Lowell kept it a one-possession game as the teams exchanged baskets, upping the score to 39-37. Belanger added to the UNH lead as she notched a fastbreak layup to give UNH a 41-37 edge. The River Hawks retaliated with a 3-pointer from Nicole Hayner to pull within a point at the midway point of the stanza.
The Wildcats would not relinquish their lead as Simpson, Pogue and Belanger strung together three straight layups to give the home team the largest lead of the afternoon at 47-40 with 8:07 left in the frame.
UML would not fade away quietly as the visitors responded with an 8-3 scoring flurry to pull within two points at 50-48 with 4:58 left in the stanza.
New Hampshire managed to stave off the rally as baskets from Frankenberger and Pogue fell at 4:20 and 3:18 respectively. The River Hawks could only muster three points in the final 2:10 of regulation as the Wildcats prevailed in the 58-51 contest.
UNH heads back on the road to continue America East action in West Hartford, Conn., when New Hampshire tussles with the University of Hartford on Wednesday, Jan. 21 (7 p.m.). The contest will be streamed on AmericaEast.tv. UNH's next home game is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 1 (1 p.m.) against Stony Brook University.
