Five Unanswered Goals Propel Women's Ice Hockey Past Vermont, 5-1

DURHAM, N.H. -- After conceding the first goal, the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team scored five unanswered goals to upend the University of Vermont, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at the Whittemore Center.
New Hampshire wins its first Hockey East contest of the season and improves to 3-8-1 overall and 1-4-0 in conference play. Vermont falls to 6-3-1, 1-1-0. The Wildcats outshot the Catamounts, 32-22 as five different skaters notched goals and three tallied multiple points. UNH went 2-for-3 on the power play while UVM was 1-for-3 on the man-advantage.
Jonna Curtis (Elk River, Minn.) tallied a goal and two assists to lead the UNH offense. Julia Fedeski (Algonquin Highlands, Ontario) and Amy Boucher (Edmonton, Alberta) each turned in a goal and an assist. Fedeski's goal was the first of her collegiate career and came shorthanded. Sara Carlson (Hutchinson, Minn.) and Amy Schlagel (Blaine, Minn.) rounded out the goal scorers for the Wildcats. Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alberta) dished out a personal best two assists in the win.
Ashley Wilkes (North Pole, Alaska) registered her first win of the season, making 21 saves in net for the 'Cats. Vermont netminder Madison Litchfield stopped 26 shots in the loss, slipping to 5-3-1.
The Wildcats recorded the first three shots of the game, but O'Neil denied Jonna Curtis (Elk River, Minn.), Jensen and then Kate Haslett (Rothesay, New Brunswick) in the opening four minutes.
UVM gained the first power play of the game as Schlagel was sent to the penalty box for slashing at 9:37. On the ensuing faceoff, UVM's Dayna Colang pushed the puck behind to Amanda Drobot. The defenseman swung the puck to Brittany Zuback who snapped a wrister by Wilkes to put the Catamounts on the board first at 9:31 in the first period.
New Hampshire managed to even the score with six seconds left in the first frame. Vilgrain pushed the puck through the neutral zone and saucered the puck to Boucher in stride. Boucher blasted a shot from the blue line as Litchfield made the initial save. Curtis crashed the net and put away the loose puck to knot the score at one apiece.
The Wildcats went on the penalty kill in the opening moments in the second stanza, but Fedeski had other ideas. The freshman jarred the puck loose in the corner, finding an open Curtis. The sophomore forward jetted up the right end of the ice and fired a shot from the UVM faceoff dot. Litchfield made the save and Kayla Mork was in position to put away the rebound. Mork could not handle the rebound, but Fedeski sniped the loose puck to score the shorthanded goal and put the 'Cats up 2-1 at 17:16.
UNH continued its scoring barrage, lighting the lamp just 3 minutes, 45 seconds later. Fedeski cleared the zone, finding Carlson in-transition. The junior forward weaved through the Catamount defense, leading an odd-man rush. Carlson managed to deke Litchfield and put the puck between the legs of the netminder for the third Wildcat goal of the game and her first of the season.
Entering the third period with a two-goal advantage, New Hampshire looked to add insurance. The Wildcats scored their fourth goal of the contest midway through the terminating period on the power play. Nicoline Jensen (Rodovre, Denmark) tried to shoot from the left point, but UVM broke up the initial bid. Curtis collected the rebound and threw a backhander on net, finding the pad of Hitchcock. Boucher was in position and tapped in the rebound past the UVM netminder to increase the home team's lead to three.
The Wildcats found themselves on the man-advantage again with 6:43 remaining in regulation. UNH won the faceoff as Vilgrain corralled the puck in the corner. The sophomore passed the puck up to the blue line, finding Schlagel. She dialed up a slap shot pass through the screen and into the back of the net to score her second goal of the season, capping off the scoring for UNH in the win.
New Hampshire returns to the ice for a home-and-home series against top-ranked Boston College. The Wildcats visit Chestnut Hill on Saturday, Nov. 15 (2 p.m.) while the Eagles trek up to Durham to close out the weekend Sunday, Nov. 16 (2 p.m.).
