Men's Soccer Edged in Overtime at Brown, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team was edged in overtime at Brown University Tuesday evening by a score of 1-0 at Stevenson Field. The loss drops the Wildcats to 5-9-1 while the Bears improve to 4-5-5.
Riley Ellis (Goffstown, N.H.) got the first shot of the game for either team in the ninth minute, but his attempt went wide of the net. In the 11th minute, Brown's James Myall fired a shot on net, but senior goalkeeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) was there to make the save.
In the 16th minute, A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.) nearly got the Wildcats on the board with a shot that rattled the crossbar, but it bounced away from the net. Carpenter made his second save of the game in the 25th minute on a shot by Brown's Jack Gorab to keep the match scoreless.
Ben Maurey took the next shot of the game for the Bears in the 37th minute of play, but the Wildcat defense forced him to shoot it wide. Ellis kept the offense going for UNH in the 44th minute, but his bid went just wide of the net.
At the end of the first half, the game was deadlocked, 0-0. The Wildcats held a 4-3 shot advantage over the Bears while Carpenter made two saves for UNH. Brown was caught offside twice in the half as well.
In the second half, Albers kept the offense coming with a shot in the 58th minute of play, but he put is just high of the target. In the 59th minute, UNH's Ben Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) fired a corner kick into the box that junior Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) connected with on a header, but it was saved by Brown keeper Erik Hanson.
With momentum rolling, Erik Martel (Bedford, N.H.) rifled a shot in the 61st minute that was blocked by the Bears. Brown put an attempt on net as Maurey tested the Wildcat defense in the 64th minute, but his shot was blocked.
In the 77th minute of play, Brown's Tariq Akeel fired a shot that nearly went in the net, but hit the crossbar instead and bounced away. With just eight seconds left in the second half, Brown fired a final attempt at breaking the 0-0 tie, but it was blocked by UNH. At the end of 90 minutes, the game was headed into overtime.
In the first overtime period, the Bears recorded the game winner on a goal by Will Cross to end the game with a score of 1-0. Quinn English threw the ball in and connected with the head of Cross who found the back of the net.
Carpenter made two saves on three shots faced in the game for UNH while Hanson made one save on the only shot he saw. Total shots were tied at 10 apiece for the two squads while UNH held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks in the match.
The Wildcats return home on Saturday, Nov. 1 to play UMass Lowell for Senior Day. The Wildcats will honor Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.), Connor Pauley (Londonderry, N.H.), David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J.), Kevin Andino (Germantown, Md.), Paul Bianchi (Essex, Vt.), Chris Wild (South Berwick, Maine) and Steven Palumbo (Kingston, N.H.). Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. on Bremner Field.
