SKUDDER'S GOAL, TWO ASSISTS PROPELS #4 WOMEN'S HOCKEY PAST MAINE, 5-2

– Brittany Skudder (Plainview, N.Y.)
recorded a goal and two assists to propel the fourth-ranked
University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team to a 5-2
victory against the University of Maine in Hockey East action
Friday night at Alfond Arena.
UNH, with its 13th consecutive win vs. Maine to extend its unbeaten
streak vs. the Black Bears to 25 games (23-0-2) and series
advantage to 32-1-3, improved to 14-4-5 overall this season with a
8-3-2-0 mark in Hockey East. UM is now 6-14-5, 3-9-3-1.
Skudder's three points marked a career high, as did the two
assists. Micaela Long (South Boston, Mass.)
extended her point-scoring streak to 16 games with a goal and an
assist.
Kristina Lavoie (Fonthill, Ontario) scored a goal
for the seventh consecutive game and Julie Allen
(Brampton, Ontario) netted a goal to mark the fifth time in seven
games she has found the back of the net. Also of note,
Raylen Dziengelewski (Southwick, Mass.) tallied an
assist in the fourth consecutive game.
UNH goaltender Kayley Herman (Weyburn,
Saskatchewan) recorded 19 saves, including eight in the third
period. Maine counterpart Ott stopped 14 shots in the first period
and 35 overall as the Wildcats recorded a 40-21 shot advantage.
New Hampshire went 3-for-7 on the power play and a perfect 6-for-6
on the penalty kill. The three power-play goals marked the
team's second-highest total this season; the Wildcats scored
four times with the skater advantage Oct. 18 vs. Niagara
University.
The Black Bears quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Amy Stech,
with the assistance of Brittany Dougherty and Jessica Bond, scored
10 seconds into the game.
UNH pulled even, 1-1, on a power-play goal by Kelly
Cahill (Farmington Hills, Mich.) at 9:28. Courtney
Sheary (Melrose, Mass.) and Skudder were credited with
assists.
The teams entered the first intermission tied at 1 despite
UNH's 15-5 shot advantage.
The Wildcats netted three second-period goals – on the
strength of a 12-8 edge in shots – to take a 4-2 lead into
the second intermission. Just as the hosts struck early in the
opening period, the visitors potted a goal in the opening minute of
the second stanza to seize a lead they would not relinquish.
Long, with the assistance of Courtney Birchard
(Mississauga, Ontario), netted a power-play goal 50 seconds into
the second period to give the 'Cats a 2-1 lead.
Skudder extended the advantage to two goals, 3-1, with an
even-strength goal at 5:12 that proved to be the game-winning
tally. Sarah Cuthbert (East Falmouth, Mass.) and
Shannon Sisk (Pipersville, Pa.) were credited with
assists.
UNH went on another power play at 7:20 and, midway through the
skater advantage, Long beat Ott but the puck ricocheted off the
pipe. Moments later, Allen scored the Wildcats' third
power-play goal of the game to give the 'Cats a 4-1 advantage
at 8:48. Long and Kelly Paton (Woodstock, Ontario)
set up the tally.
Dougherty pulled Maine within 4-2 at 18:41 of the second
period.
Lavoie closed the scoring when she extended UNH's lead to 5-2
at 13:21 of the third period. Skudder tallied her second assist of
the game on the score, which was also set up by Dziengelewski.
New Hampshire and Maine conclude the two-game series Jan. 30 (7
p.m.) at Alfond Arena. The Wildcats' next home game is Feb. 6
against Boston University. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 2
p.m.
