Grad student Bastian Meisen (Munich, Germany) of the UNH skiing team was named a Service Credit Union Student-Athlete of the Week on March 14. He led the Wildcats to sixth place at the NCAA Skiing Championships, and that marked UNH's highest finish at the NCAAs in the 40-year coaching tenure of Cory Schwartz.
Bastian raced to fifth place with an aggregate time of 1:58.40 for a spot on the All-America First Team in the men's giant slalom, which was held March 10 at Park City Mountain Resort (Park City, Utah). He completed the first run in 1:01.75 (eighth place) and climbed to No. 5 with the fourth-fastest Run 2 time of 56.65 seconds. One day later, Bastian recorded the second-best UNH effort and placed 20th overall in the men's slalom with a combined time of 1:57.50.
Bastian's fifth-place NCAA finish ties for the third-best effort by a Wildcat alpine skier the past decade; Sam Coffey placed third in the 2013 slalom, Patrick Kenney was fourth in the 2020 giant slalom and Taylor Vest-Burton was fifth in the 2013 slalom.
Bastian entered the 2022 NCAAs ranked #4 in the EISA in the giant slalom and 20th in the slalom; he was #6 overall in EISA men's alpine.
