Men’s Soccer Advances to AE Semis on Penalty Kicks vs. UMBC

Ryo Miyata scores PK winner and Scott Williams earns shutout
DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Ryo Miyata (Yokohama, Japan) scored the penalty kick shootout winner and senior goalkeeper Scott Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a shutout and made a big save in the shootout as the No. 4 seed University of New Hampshire men's soccer team advanced to the America East Semifinals with a 5-3 shootout win after a 0-0 tie with No. 5 seed UMBC on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium in the First Round of the America East Championship.
The Wildcats will play at No. 1 seed and defending national champion Vermont on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Wildcats are now 5-6-5, while the Retrievers conclude the season, 6-6-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The 'Cats earned a strong scoring opportunity in the 28th minute when Miyata fired a shot towards the lower left side of the goal, but Emigdio Lopez was there for the save.
- The Wildcats almost took the lead in the 55th minute as sophomore forward Cabot McLaren (Sugar Hill, N.H.) sent a shot from eight yards out that was deflected by Lopez and then cleared off the goal line by Adamo Pantaleo of UMBC.
- Williams made a save in the 76th minute when Brady Geho blasted a shot from 18 yards out.
- After two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, the Wildcats scored on all five of their penalty kicks for the 5-3 win as graduate student captain Jiwoo Lee (Seoul, South Korea), senior forward Elias Khodri (Lyon, France), senior midfielder Terry Makedika (Paris, France), senior captain Matteo Piccardo (Genova, Italy) and Miyata each found the back of the net.
- Williams made a save on Geho on UMBC's second shot of the penalty kick. Williams was named the Player of the Game by the conference.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UNH outshot UMBC, 17-5, while the Wildcats took seven shots on goal and the Retrievers attempted one.
- The Wildcats recorded 10 corner kicks and the Retrievers took two.
- Williams earned his third shutout of the season with one win, while Lopez made six saves for UMBC.
